Oddo undergoes knee surgery Tuesday

1 April, 2008

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Massimo Oddo will miss the rest of the season and is now a major doubt for Euro 2008 after undergoing meniscus surgery.

Milan released a statement this evening announcing that Oddo will have the operation on the medial meniscus ligament in his left knee tomorrow in Rome.

It is a bitter blow for the Rossoneri, who must already do without Ronaldo for the rest of the campaign.

Marcos Cafu, Serginho and Marek Jankulovski are struggling with injury, while Alessandro Nesta is suspended for the Serie A encounters with Cagliari and Juventus.

Oddo played the first 59 minutes of Milan’s 2-1 home defeat to Atalanta, but was substituted and replaced by Cristian Brocchi.

The extent of Oddo’s injury was not known and tests today revealed the serious problem requiring surgery.

It is not yet clear how long this will keep him sidelined, but the World Cup winner is now a doubt for Euro 2008, which kicks off on June 7.

No Oddo and Nesta against Juve :)

The former Juventus coach played for the Giallorossi between 1979 and 1987 as a midfielder. He was part of the 1984 Champions League final team which lost to Liverpool.

The coach admits that he would like meet the Reds in a future Champions League final as Roma coach and get revenge on that unsuccessful evening in Rome.

“I would like to end my coaching career with a club and I would like to do it with Roma,” said the coach.

“It would really be nice, you cannot find a city like Rome anywhere in the world.”

“The loss in the 1984 European Cup against Liverpool was a big disappointment, however it’s gone and times have changed but one day I would like it to happen, who knows it may even happen already this year.”

Milan have been poor for large parts of the season, the Rossoneri have been a shadow of the side which conquered Europe last year.

They are currently fifth in Serie A and Champions League qualification for next season looks doubtful.

Speculation that Zambrotta is set for a return to Serie A with Milan is not a new topic, indeed the question on everyone’s lips is not if the transfer will be completed, but when.

The 31-year-old signed for Barcelona from Juventus following the Calciopoli crisis in the summer of 2006. He has not truly demonstrated his full potential in Catalonia, and along with his wife has become increasingly homesick.

Controcampo says that Milan officials have been in lengthy discussions with Zambrotta's agent, Beppe Bonetto, and virtually all details regarding the deal have been agreed upon.

An announcement is expected within a number of days, possibly even hours. Zambrotta has also played for Como and Bari, and has starred 70 times for Italy, scoring twice.

He played at the European Championships of 2000 and 2004, and the World Cups of 2002 and 2006, the latter of which he has a winners medal from.

nesta can be a real asshole sometimes and spring up with a great game. So any time hes not playing i will be happy. Also i dont think hes been having a bad year its just that he had to do it all this year in that horrid backline.

Also i think kaka will be back to play us so its more about our defense anyway for that game.

The best April fool joke was England qualifying for the Euros instead of Spain due to Spain's political troubles . I know a few English fanatics who celebrated for hours before someone told them it was a joke .

Aye, that was a good one.

Caught out a fair few folk, not that that is particularly difficult given the intelligence, or lack thereof, of English fans.

Calcio Debate: Who Will Win The Battle For Fourth Place?

With just seven games of the Serie A season left, four teams are fighting it out for the final Champions League place. Carlo Garganese asks - who will win the battle?

Isn’t it refreshing to reach the business end of the Serie A season with everything still to play for?

Inter and Roma, separated by four points, are both fighting for the Scudetto, and any more slip-ups could even allow Juventus the chance of an unlikely challenge.

The battle at the basement is also intriguing. Just three points separate the bottom six teams, with four of these all level on 29 points.

Perhaps the most exciting spectacle of all however, is the tussle for the final Champions League position.

Fiorentina 53 31 15 8 8 45 32

Udinese 50 31 14 8 9 42 39

Milan 49 31 13 10 8 45 27

Sampdoria 49 31 14 7 10 44 37

Any of the above four teams could clinch the fourth place currently occupied by Fiorentina.

The Viola are in pole position, however their form recently in Serie A has been inconsistent. In their last eight matches they have won four, lost four.

Udinese and Sampdoria are the teams with momentum. The Zebrette are unbeaten in six, and have won three on the bounce, including a 3-1 win over Fiorentina last weekend. Samp meanwhile have also not lost in six, and have won four of their last five matches.

In terms of prestige, Milan probably believe they have a God-given right to be in the Champions League, a competition that, until this season, they had dominated for five years.

The Rossoneri’s form is the worst of all these teams, winning just two from seven, and losing three of their last four matches. They also face a tough run-in, having to play Juventus and Napoli away, Inter in the derby, as well as a potential decider with Udinese at San Siro on the final day.

Udinese and Samp also have some tough fixtures though. As well as facing each other at the Stadio Friuli in week 34, the former also has to play Roma at home, while the latter’s last four fixtures reads Fiorentina, Roma, Palermo, Juventus.

Fiorentina may be considered as favourites due to the fact that of their seven remaining games, five are against Reggina, Palermo, Parma (all home), and Cagliari, Torino (away). The other two are against Samp and Inter.

However the Viola’s participation in the UEFA Cup may drain their resources, and they face the first of two tough quarter final matches against Dutch champions PSV Eindhoven tonight.

It also must be noted that it is often the relegation teams fighting for their lives who are the toughest to play at this stage of the season. The fact that there are so many clubs who could go down means that no one can be taken for granted.

Injuries will also play a part. Milan have a whole host of players out. Massimo Oddo and Ronaldo’s seasons are over, Alessandro Nesta is also sidelined, while those who are fit, appear to be on their last legs having played so many games in 2008.

Sampdoria will surely be rejuvenated by the return from suspension of the mercurial Antonio Cassano, who on his day can single-handedly lead his team to victory. Udinese have Antonio Di Natale as their star man, while Fiorentina of course can rely on the brilliant Adrian Mutu. This is the time for the big players to drag their teams over the finishing line, meaning that Milan will be praying that a certain Kaka can overcome his injury problems and start firing.

Predicting who will finish fourth is a really impossible task. If I was forced for an answer I would probably have to say Fiorentina, as Udinese and Samp may lack the experience, while Milan just look so tired that not even a bottle of Viagra’s would revitalise them.

What is certain is that it’s sure to be a gripping final seven games to the Serie A season.

I'd have seen the humor if not for the fact of seeing the reality first. When dodgy squads like a 5th place Liverpool end up mysteriously qualifying for the CL, crap like that is always entirely possible with UEFA.
