Baldini leaves Catania post
Monday 31 March, 2008

Silvio Baldini is no longer Catania Coach after he left the Elefanti by mutual consent this evening.

The Rossazzurri fell to joint penultimate place after losing 2-1 to Torino yesterday and are fighting for their Serie A lives.

President Antonino Pulvirenti hinted that Baldini could be on his way out after yesterday’s game and the expected announcement came today.

“The club noted the Coach’s feelings and after a series of discussions the decision was taken by both sides that Baldini would no longer be Catania’s tactician,” a statement explained.

“We would like to thank Silvio for all the work he has done and wish him all the best on a personal and professional level.”

There are strong rumours that former Inter goalkeeping legend and ex-Dinamo Bucharest boss Walter Zenga will take over on the Stadio Massimino hot set within the next 24 hours

This mutual consent stuff is hilarious. Not one coach getting fired isn't followed by that statement. Basically they called him in, told him he sucks, told him they don't want him anymore, he protested, they persisted and after a week of non stop hatred and insulting smses he finally agreed that "yes it would be best for us both". It's like you're being executed and the guy says "any last wishes?". "Yeah, tell them we both decided it was best this way."

Seems like every coach that takes part of the panel at La Domenica Sportiva gets a new job faster than Superman.
Well, they like to line them up line tin soldiers on that show. You gotta have at least two 82'ers whose coaching careers haven't exactly taken off yet, a couple of other people they rotate in, and Platini on the line from Paris if he feels like it (I guess he's off the hook now).

Zenga becomes Catania Coach Tuesday 1 April, 2008

from channel4.com

Walter Zenga is the new boss of struggling Catania after the departure of Silvio Baldini yesterday.

The Elefanti dropped into the drop zone after last weekend’s 2-1 defeat against Torino and their battle for survival looks set to go to the wire.

Baldini left by mutual consent last night and former Inter goalkeeping hero Zenga flew in just hours later to sign an agreement.

“Catania want to communicate that they have signed a deal with Zenga,” a statement from sporting director Pietro Lo Monaco reads on the club’s website.

“The presentation of the new boss will take place at 11am in the Press room at Catania’s headquarters.”

The 48-year-old tactician has never worked in Italy but has led Romanian sides Dinamo Bucharest and National Bucharest, New England Revolution, Red Star Belgrade and Turkish outfit Gaziantepspor.

Since leaving Dinamo at the end of last year, Zenga has been working as a pundit on Italian TV station Rai.

Zenga will start work immediately when he presides over training at Massannunziata this afternoon and will have his debut against Napoli this Sunday.

McClaren Confirms Inter Talks
Former England boss Steve McClaren has admitted he met Inter officials last week with a view to taking over as Nerazzurri coach next season.

McClaren was in Italy last week to film a commercial for a well-known breakfast cereal, in which he pokes fun at himself for his failure to guide England to Euro 2008. But the trip also involved a stop by at Inter HQ.

It is widely expected that current coach Roberto Mancini will be departing the club in the summer having seemingly lost the dressing room and created tensions with his snap resignation and speedy backtrack after the Champions League defeat to Liverpool.

Interest Flattering

"It's true that I discussed the role with some of their people," said McClaren, who announced back in January that he was ready to return to management.

"Of course it's extremely flattering to be considered and I'd be honoured to take the job, but nothing's finalised yet. No offer has been made and I'm not the only person they're looking at," added the former Manchester United assistant, out of work since being sacked as England boss in November.

Moratti A Fan

It is understood that club president Massimo Moratti was not at the meeting but that he's put McClaren's name on a shortlist of three people to be Inter's next boss, with José Mourinho rumoured to be one of the others in the running.

Moratti was a big fan of McClaren's work as manager of Middlesbrough, where he of course knocked out Roma on the way to the 2006 UEFA Cup final, and apparently is not deterred by McClaren's England reign, considering club and international football very different matters.

In addition, the former Boro boss is spoken of in the highest terms by current Fulham and former Inter coach Roy Hodgson, with whom Moratti keeps regular contact.

If he gets the job, it is hoped that McClaren's bold, gung-ho style of football and superb tactical nouse would be able to transform the Nerazzurri into a side capable of winning both Serie A and the Champions League.
