Zaccheroni: Inter Are Boring

Former Udinese and Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni says that Inter are not the most exciting of teams to watch, and believes they are having a crisis of confidence.

The Nerazzurri have embarked on a dreadful run of form over the past month, and have seen their lead over Roma cut from 11 points to just four.

“This Inter has never been spectacular, but it was solid in physique and mentality,” Zaccheroni wrote in La Nazione.

“Now, however, the legs of crucial players like Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Esteban Cambiasso are under strain and the mind is shaken by the sudden Champions League exit.”

Opinion is split in Italy whether the Giallorossi can complete their comeback and take the title, and the lead at the top could be cut even more tonight as Inter face a tough trip to play Lazio, while Roma tackle Cagliari.

“Today Inter must resolve some problems and they can only do that in one way – by winning. That’s not as simple now as it was before,” said Zac.

“The team has lost a bit of the belief that was so important throughout the first part of this season.”

Totti: Forza Lazio? Never!

Lazio can help Roma win the Scudetto this evening, but Francesco Totti can’t bring himself to cheer on his rivals!

The Biancocelesti take on leaders Inter tonight at the Olimpico and a positive result could help Roma close the four-point gap at the top.

The possibility of the Serie A title is still not enough to convince Er Pupone to pull on a Lazio scarf.

“I can never cheer on Lazio, there is absolutely no doubt about it! Even if the table says otherwise, because it would be convenient if Inter did lose.

“If someone asks me to say Forza Lazio, I reply no thanks…”

Yet the rivalry between these two clubs goes even deeper than that, according to former Lazio Coach Alberto Zaccheroni.

He was on the Biancocelesti bench on May 5, 2002 when they beat Inter 4-2 to hand Juventus the Scudetto on the last day of the season – although Roma were also in the running that weekend.

“The pressure soon started from the Lazio fans and the talk radio stations. There were even threats and in some cases suggestions like 'shoot at the advertising boards,’” revealed Zac.

“In fact, I had to deal with many players pulling out. I had to rely on those who would not back down, people like Jaap Stam, Giuliano Giannichedda and Dejan Stankovic.”

Inter had actually been on 2-2 at half-time and only needed a draw to take the title, but in the second half conceded from Diego Simeone and Simone Inzaghi to lose 4-2.

“There were two decisive factors that day. Inter were psychologically unprepared for any difficulties. They were convinced they had already won and the fans spent the afternoon sewing the badge on to their scarves.

“Secondly, the Lazio fans jeered Karel Poborsky because they considered him an 'enemy’ as he was friends with Pavel Nedved.

“The lad heard the chants when he was in the players’ tunnel and was so angry he became incredibly motivated. In fact, as soon as he scored the two goals he ran under the Lazio fans and insulted them.”

If anything, Zaccheroni sees Inter in a worse condition now than they were in 2002.

“At the time it was a psychological issue, as they were convinced the Scudetto was in their pocket and collapsed at the first sign of trouble.

“This time I get the feeling the psychological issues are joined by physical ones. After losing to Liverpool there was a short-circuit in the Inter system.”

Falcao expects Inter breakdown

Roma legend Paulo Roberto Falcao believes his club can catch Inter at the top of the Scudetto. “If they catch them, the Nerazzurri will collapse.”

Roberto Mancini’s men had an 11-point lead only a few weeks ago, but that has been whittled down to four with eight games to go.

“I watched Inter-Juventus and the Nerazzurri disappointed me. They often end their games with 10 men and that happens if the team is extremely tense,” explained the Brazilian in the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Inter have also made a dangerous change of course. Before they relied on the class of their champions, now they focus on aggression.”

In Falcao’s view, the real advantage in this title race is entirely psychological.

“Since the Champions League loss to Liverpool, this invincible side transformed into a squad carrying around a thousand fears and phobias.

“Mancini also made a mistake in saying he would leave in June. He should not have let himself get swept up in the disappointment of their elimination.”

Under new Serie A rules, if the two clubs finish level at the top then Inter will win the Scudetto because of their superior record in direct confrontations – a win and a draw.

“It won’t get to that,” assured Falcao. “Inter have more champions and a four-point advantage, so if they keep their heads then the title is theirs without a problem.

“However, if this crisis is irreversible then the moment Roma catch up Inter will collapse.”

Falcao wore the Giallorossi jersey from 1980 to '85, winning the 1983 Scudetto, two Coppa Italias and reaching the European Cup Final.

If you watched Cagliari last few games, you surely noticed, that in their current form they are TOP6 team in Serie A, and to play away match at Cagliari is extremely hard, but i hope Roma can get all three points from there. Right now it looks more like a draw.
