Cagliari win points appeal
Cagliari’s chances of survival received a massive boost today with the annulment of their three-point penalty.
The Sardinians had been docked three points on February 29 due to a legal loophole in the Italian sports justice system.
They started legal action against one of their former players, Gianluca Grassadonia, to sue him for libel after he told newspapers the club was close to groups of violent fans.
Cagliari insisted they had gone through the proper channels, as Grassadonia was no longer a player and therefore not covered by the sports justice courts.
They lodged an appeal that was today accepted by the Federal Court of Justice, handing back the three points.
This lifts Cagliari off the foot of the table, moving from 25 points to 28, leaving them joint third from bottom with Livorno.
Empoli are now last on 26 points with Reggina on 27 with eight rounds left in the Serie A season.
