Speculation is increasing in Italy that Lazio are trying to sign Palermo’s Andrea Barzagli before the end of this month, while Claudio Lotito is reportedly attacked by a group of Torino supporters.
Lazio Looking To Sign Barzagli?
Barzagli
The Biancocelesti are currently having a disastrous season and they are languishing in 14th position just three points above the relegation zone.
This has led to quite an active January transfer campaign, with Manchester City’s Rolando Bianchi and Dinamo Bucharest’s Stefan Radu already being snapped up.
The spending has not ended there, and the next name on the list, according to the Corriere dello Sport is Palermo star Andrea Barzagli.
The 26-year-old is undoubtedly one of the best central defenders in Serie A, and although he has struggled at times for his club this season, he was an absolute rock for his country in the Euro 2008 qualifying games against France, Ukraine, Georgia and Scotland.
Lazio want to sign Barzagli on loan until the end of the season, with an option to then sign him on a permanent basis for €13m.
The Biancocelesti are in need of a centre-back after Guglielmo Stendardo completed his six-month loan deal to Juventus this morning.
Palermo may agree to this proposal, providing they can find an adequate replacement before the transfer window closes. Reggina’s Salvatore Aronica is reportedly a target.
Rosanero President Maurizio Zamparini is also likely to demand that winger Pasquale Foggia, who is owned by Lazio but on-loan at Cagliari, is included in any deal.
Lotito Attacked
Meanwhile in other news, Lazio President Claudio Lotito was reportedly attacked by Torino fans during his club’s goalless draw in Turin yesterday.
Il Messaggero says that he was set upon by a group of Granata fanatics shortly after Simone Barone’s 44th minute sending off for the home side.
Stewards and security were required to intervene, and Lotito was forced to watch the second-half on television in the dressing room.
