One Coach Kicks Another As Controversy Mars Parma-Catania

That Catania and Parma played out a 2-2 draw on the afternoon became an anecdote as events on the touchline dominated proceedings.

The drama began when Catania boss Silvio Baldini furiously protested against a decision, and was subsequently handed his marching orders.

As he was walking off, he gave out some final instructions to his players, and Parma coach Dominico Di Carlo attempted to throw a few words of choice, asking Baldini to get off the pitch.

Baldini, incredibly, responded by kicking Di Carlo, which sparked off some incredible scenes on the touchline. People rushed into the melee, and somehow managed to drag Baldini away from it, and he now faces a lengthy touchline ban.

Parma patron Tommaso Ghiradi was absolutely livid, and minced no words speaking about the incident.

"Baldini should be ashamed of himself," said Ghirardi. "If he was my coach, I’d fire him on the spot.

"In 10 years of football I have never seen anything like it. If we don’t behave appropriately, how can we expect the fans to?"

Catania president Antonio Pulvirenti was quick to respond, as the physical encounter between the coaches turned into a verbal one between the presidents.

"Well he [Ghirardi] is not the Catania President, I am," he said. "I don’t think it was such an extreme gesture.

"Clearly it wasn’t nice either, but he was provoked. Our coach was the first person to admit it was a wrong thing to do. But there is no need to exaggerate.

"While Baldini was giving the final instructions to his squad before walking away, the Parma coach went up to him. It was not his job to do so and you saw the reaction that prompted.

"It wasn’t right, but we are men and sometimes these things can happen. We are men of sport. These are things that should not happen, but let us end the controversy here."

Serie A Team Of The Week: Round 1

Goal.com provides a brief list of those who deserved a place in the sun after the Serie A Round 1 action. As every week there were more players who deserved a place than places available...

Team of the week (4-3-3):

Doni (Roma): The Giallorossi can definitely count on the Brazilian goalkeeper who has come a long way since his arrival in the Italian Serie A league.

Nesta (Milan): Great performance by the central defender who was practically perfect. Donadoni will surely miss him against France.

Zapata (Udinese): If Inter failed to score a second goal against the Friulani, it was mostly due to Zapata’s brilliant defending. How come none of the big teams were after him this summer?

Mexes (Roma): With a Mexes like this, who needs Chivu? Defends well and scores often. Spalletti has no problems in defence.

Panucci (Roma): Despite the age, he still performing at his best and few can argue his qualities in the defensive phase. Maybe he can prove useful against France.

Rosina (Torino): What a goal to kick-off the new Serie A season! That is the reason why they call him 'Rosinaldo’.

Kaka` (Milan): Started the season which will lead him to the Golden Ball award with a brace. He has become a true leader of the team and can bring more silverware to the Rossoneri.

Aquilani (Roma): Great start to the season for what can become one of Europe’s best midfielders if he keeps up the good work.

Iaquinta (Juventus): Came in as a substitute in the last half hour and helped the Bianconeri score 4 goals, including his own persona brace.

Trezeguet (Juventus): No wonder the Bianconeri wanted to hold on to him at all cost this past summer. A goal machine who will prove vital for the Old Lady’s return to Serie A.

Morimoto (Catania): The 19-year-old has been compared to Ronaldo in Japan and after Sunday’s goal, few will doubt his qualities. He also set up Baiocco for Catania’s second goal.

Honourable Mention:

Fortin (Cagliari)
Rossi (Parma)
Barzagli (Palermo)
Montolivo (Fiorentina)
Ambrosini (Milan)
Pandev (Lazio)
Amoruso (Reggina)
