Moratti slams door on Cassano
Massimo Moratti is considering his options for Inter’s centenary transfer campaign, including Leo Messi and Fernando Torres, but not Antonio Cassano.
The patron has already hinted he will open up his wallet for some huge summer signings to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the club.
“Messi is absolutely extraordinary, but considering the rationale of our team and the way we play football, Torres wouldn’t be unwelcome either,” Moratti told Sky Italia television.
“I don’t know much about Sergio Aguero, but they tell me he is brilliant. If they were free, I’d pick up all three of them!”
This is not the first time these stars have been linked with the Nerazzurri and Moratti has never disguised his admiration for Messi.
However, the little Argentine has suffered yet another muscular injury and at a young age his career has already been blighted by physical problems.
Liverpool are unlikely to part company with Torres, who will face Inter on Tuesday in the Champions League, while Aguero is another Argentinean striker currently plying his trade with Atletico Madrid.
The only Italian option to spruce up their front line is Cassano, who is still partly owned by Real Madrid despite his fine season with Sampdoria.
“Cassano? It depends on trusting the consistency of his character. He is a lovely lad, but he needs to learn to control some things. From what I can see, he is unable to do that.”
Coach Roberto Mancini is a big fan of Cassano and wanted him to join the club, but a five-match ban for swearing and throwing his shirt at a referee highlighted just how irascible the striker can be.
Now Moratti can look to the future as well, with Inter on track for a third straight Scudetto and needing at least three goals to progress in the Champions League.
“It is right to remember these 100 years, though they are not the last. If we continue to have faith in this squad, the players and the Coach, I don’t think we’ll run into any great difficulty.
“As for the Champions League, it is just one match and it’s best not to say anything right now.”
