Del Neri on the attack Tuesday 1 February, 2005

Luigi Del Neri is trying to out-attack Zdenek Zeman with plans for a 4-2-4 system when Roma visit Lecce tomorrow evening.
“Amantino Mancini has done some extraordinary things and I believe a Coach must make the most of his players,” commented the Giallorossi tactician. “This is why I can tell you that I like the idea of a 4-2-4 system for this side.”
The Capital club has certainly been exciting to watch so far this season, netting 15 goals in the last six Serie A games, so Brazilian winger Mancini could push up to expand the already deadly trident attack of Francesco Totti, Antonio Cassano and Vincenzo Montella.
There can be no better place to test that out than the Stadio Via del Mare, where current Lecce boss Zeman has instilled a credo of attack at all costs.
“Zeman represented a turning point for all of Italian football,” noted Del Neri. “His organisation, philosophy and cross-field moves were revolutionary. I suppose we have in common our love for attacking play.”
Zeman gave his teachings to many of Roma’s stars, including Totti, when he Coached the club between 1997 and 1999. The Giallorossi have been troubled this season, but with 20 points from their last nine games they seem to have turned a corner.
“The basis of our performances now is a solid and united team that has found a joint motivation and that is to get as high up the table as possible. Cassano is also physically fitter than he was, which allows him to do more running off the ball.”
Portuguese international defender Abel Xavier could get his Roma debut tomorrow night against Lecce after his transfer came through.
“He needs to work hard,” noted Del Neri, “but he is a good player who could come in handy this season. We didn’t bring in any strikers because I had specifically requested Federico Cossato, but Chievo need him now.”
