Mancini shrugs off Inter stumble
Saturday 11 September, 2004

The Nerazzurri were held to a 2-2 draw at Chievo, but Roberto Mancini and Adriano insist this is par for the course even if they are to challenge for the Scudetto.

“We knew it was going to be a difficult game,” commented the Coach. “We made a few too many mistakes, especially in defence, but these are errors that can happen.”

The Flying Donkeys were leading 2-1 at the half-time break, but a stunning Adriano drive ensured Inter got a share of the points.

“We went from the possible 2-0 lead to a 1-1 draw within minutes,” sighed Mancini. “There is a lot of work still to do, and it’s a shame as we could have opened the campaign with a victory. There have to improvements in every area of the team.”

The tactician tried to experiment with the Christian Vieri-Adriano partnership that had struggled to gel last season.

“Both of the strikers did very well. Bobo moved nicely and was so close to scoring twice. I saw he was back to full fitness midweek and now Vieri needs to play regularly.”

Once again, Adriano is pivotal to the Nerazzurri’s chances of success, as his goal earned the point at the Stadio Bentegodi.

“There is much to be done and we need to get it done quickly,” commented the Brazilian, “seeing as we have to play in the Champions’ League on Tuesday. In any case, a draw with a good side like Chievo is not to be sniffed at.”

“I would have preferred to win,” he added, “but the season has only just started and we have all the time to recover.”
