i really dislike a lot the ottomans did especially to the "east christians"... the shia from Iran are a different story because they were constantly in war with them and then there is all that sunni vs shia thing... but you cant deny that it was easier for a non-muslim to live in the Ottoman empire than a non-christian in the European christian kingdoms. for example if you were a jew it was much more safely for you to live in the Ottoman empire than anywhere in Europe at that time..

It's like saying WW2 happened because Germany invaded Poland.
its not the same because the law was the same in both cases (sharia) who everyone folowed.

Again, no really. Although your statement about jews is somewhat true, the only empire at the time that had zero tolerence for everything non-catholic was the Spanish empire. Other than that yes, a muslim and a jew could live in Europe the same way they could live in the Ottoman empire if not better. Empires like Venice, Britain, Russia..etc.

As if i talked about religion.

I couldn't find the original article but here is the one for example, if you want to know what i mean.

You didn't have to talk about religion when the Ottoman empire you were discussing built itself on Sharia law and as a defender of Islam.

I can't believe we're even discussing this :lol2:

You didn't bother reading what i post, why did you reply then? I too can't believe we're discussing this as one state can take another's governance system as model without taking it's religion.

I'm sure you've read Shlomo Sand's The Invention of the Jewish People, what do you think of it?

I just read it, this is one of the most fascinating books I have ever read. I was aware of some of the things he says like the fact that there was extensive Jewish proselytism in Antiquity but the manner in which he completely deconstructs Zionism is great.

So, the Palestinians are in large the descendants of ancient Hebrews while the Jews who migrated to Palestine in the 20th century were for the greater part descendants of converts :lol2:

Fascinating stuff.

Actually I didn't read that one. Sounds like something I'd like though :D . How's his source work?

I've had the book for a while now, and never got around reading it. Was strongly recommended to me by my old man.
