Or.. my country just has a lot of foreigners visiting or living here. It's a meaningless statistic without knowing the circumstances.

I think you're interpreting our reaction as saying that Iran isn't worth visiting or that Iranian people are dangerous. That's not the issue.

It's just that the Iranian regime does in fact have nationals from Western Europe or the US arrested for no reason so they can exchange them for Iranian criminals. This is not one isolated case, it's not two, it's not three. It's a strategy the Iranian regime has been following for a very long time now. Under those circumstances it's not wise to go. The likelihood of being arrested is smaller than the likelihood of returning safely, but it's nowhere near purely hypothetical. And if you're held your life might be over. No country is worth that risk.

@Seven :tup: :beer:
I don't know what went wrong for Belgian Tourists in Iran but Im one of the ethnic minorities in Iran who live under authoritarian regime. The regime has ruined everything for us, We Baloch People are facing equal injustices and economic and racial discrimination. Probably those Belgians who traveled Iran arrested under the pretext of being spy in order to using them for political agendas.

i have never once mistook what you are saying as a slight against iranian people and understood you are talking about. i think you mistook what i said that i am defending the government when i only pointed out that travelling to iran and iran itself is stil beautiful depsite governemnt . i did not but pointed out that millions of tourists come visit with no issue as long as they avoid anything that would considered a no no by government.

i am not defending the government. i am pointing out it's not as unsafe as being presented for traveler. yes the danger is basically that your life could be in prison or death. but the chances of it happening are slim as proven by millions of travelers coming and going . you are more likely to die from getting hit a by drunk driver on your way to the airport than being held prisoner in iran as a foreigner.

i think your are underestimating what average traveller will do. your chance of getting dying from a mass shooting is higher in usa than being held prisoner in iran, but it doesn't stop me or millions of others from travelling to usa.

The majority of those travellers are not westerners though.

There is less incentive for the regime to arrest these people and use them to exchange prisoners. And the tourists themselves are more in tune with what sort of behaviour stands out or when it's best to make themselves scarce when there is a risk of arrested.

Media always show the dark side of Iran and demonize Iran with its toxic and spurious narratives. Aside politic, we have a rich culture , historical places and most heartwarming, generous people but because of some of the dishonest propaganda in Western Media underrated country, and a lot of the time misrepresented
