Mauricio Isla has long been regarded as one of South America’s most exciting prospects since bursting onto the scene with Udinese back in 2007.
The 24-year-old international combines accomplished technique with an impressive engine, qualities which led the Zebrette to capture his signature shortly after the World Under-20 championships.
Initially a forward, it was Universidad Católica who first spotted Isla’s potential, with the Santiago-based outfit promptly deciding his talents would be better suited to the wing-back position.
His strong, attacking performances also caught the eye of international coach Marcelo Bielsa, who handed him his debut in 2007, despite not having yet made a league appearance for his new club.
In five seasons with Udinese, the Chilean occupied a variety of roles across defence and midfield, making a total 151 appearances and finding the target on seven occasions.
He will now link up with fellow countryman Arturo Vidal, adding extra dynamism and industry to the Bianconeri cause.
