I don't know if anybody has been following this but the anger and disgust of the Irish people towards the systematic torture and rape of thousands of children at the hands of the Catholic Church is reaching critical mass.

The Cloyne report was recently released detailing Vatican complicity in covering up criminal activity and a shocking endemic of abuse.

For a country that had Homosexuality as a criminal offence until twenty years ago this is a very significant occurrence. Not only did the church cover the abuse up but it also broke the laws of the state and international law

I can only hope this leads to forceful action with the expulsion of the Papal Nuncio as the first step. The courage and resilience of the victims demands it and I think if Ireland can do it, any state that has suffered in such ways can. I'm very proud what is the first progressive step towards justice for the betrayed children of Ireland .

Yeah, I heard about it. I have to say that as long as politicians make speeches I'm not expecting much, talking is easy. Although it seems a fairly unusual speech.

It sure would be good to remove the Vatican's tentacles from the national politics of Ireland (and impossibly, Italy).

it makes me sick as well the Catholic Church has drifted so far from what YESHUA wanted its so sad really. Those with much , much will be expected and judgement day comes for all. Believe it or not I'm more in doctrinal sync with Martin Luther as I believe he foresaw all this corruption coming. Just let the priests marry like they used to and the priest shortage and pediphillia wouldnt be an issue. Yet they want to sit behind man made doctrine and forsake God's church

the church might be but the men inside with their errors and greed are not. Just like any organization, the men inside some good some evil, dont always make the group

In this case 'the bad' is the Incumbent Pope who was responsible for fixing the abusive status quo, it's so endemic that I doubt the good men can make a difference, mabye they should from a reformed catholic church. Technically it would be a violation of sovereignty i.e. an act of war

i would be down in the reformed catholic church. what you stated above shows the church as a microcosm of the world at large , evil is the majority while good men struggle to make a difference

I agree with breaking the confession seal! How does a priest do society good when horrible confessions are given and nothing can be done, if a serious crime is confessed it should be reported

Being a catholic priest is the dream job of pedophiles. If the Vatican can interfere in the Irish legal system what can they do in poor third world countries. There is an interesting case in the Kenyan courts right now. It's about time to kick pedophiles out of the catholic church.

Vatican recalls Papal Nuncio for 'consultations' on Cloyne report

The Vatican has summoned its representative in Ireland to Rome for "consultations" on the Cloyne report into clerical child sex abuse. It follows a damning accusation from the Government that the Vatican had tried to obstruct child protection measures, and the inquiry, into the diocese. News first broke of this recall of Guiseppe Leanza on Vatican radio this morning. The Press Office of the Holy See later confirmed the move for what it called "consultations" on the Cloyne report. But many question the use of the words recall, rather than call back, as recall suggests the measure could be a diplomatic rebuff to Ireland. Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore said that the decision to recall the Papal Nuncio to the Vatican for consultations is a matter for the Holy See. In a statement, Minister Gilmore went on to say that the Government is awaiting the response of the Holy See to the Cloyne report, and it is to be expected that the Vatican would wish to consult in depth with the Nuncio on its response. Within hours of the Cloyne report being made public the Papal Nuncio had been summoned to Iveagh House where it was made clear the Government wanted answers from Rome on the issues raised. And there had been repeated and mounting calls for Guiseppe Leanza to be expelled. Last week's strongly worded Dáil statement by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny strongly criticising the Vatican is thought to have led to today's announcement. Relations between Ireland the Holy See are at a low point in the wake of this and other scandals surrounding child protection.
