So anyone like French hip hop? Personally I have a feeling it's much better than Yank. For one thing it seems they haven't lost track of the basic concept of what music really is about: the music. Not the lyrics. And not the boring videos with the cars and the women.

l'ip op is pretty great. The French language works really well for this kind of thing.

Yeah, most of the scene over here stick together now in an attempt to make it big internationally. Doubt it will work if they're only gonna copy what the Americans do. At least Tensta's sound was a bit fresh when he first came out with the disco like beats.

Exactly. That's what caught my attention at first when Tahir told me about Tensta, the electroness it's a unique sound. By the way, I like that Lazee track mixgenre tracks like those are already fresh, does he have an album?

I get what you're saying Martin. American hip hop and rap has taken a wrong turn with their 'hoes' and cars and money blah blah. Also the increase in use of auto-tune really turned me off (sorry Aush :D). You may not be looking hard enough though. Great American hip hop still exists but its just over shadowed by a whole lot of crap on the charts.

I don't agree about the importance of emphasis on music in rap though. Some of the best hip hop tracks take a very minimalist approach when it comes to the backing tracks which puts more focus on the rap itself. It may not be considered as music per se, but how they time their raps and the wording of it is very important in a rhythmic rather then melodic sense. Some of my favorite rap tracks have a simple piano loop accompanied by a 4/4 drum beat.

    I really prefer something more orchestral, I mean that's really taking rap as far as it can go. But something simple can be good also, if it's appealing. Now a lot of music in rap is just plain annoying instead.

    If an artist can achieve that without neglecting the rap itself, that's the best possible scenario. But in too many cases you rappers not putting enough or any effort into rapping yet they have an intricate piece of music backing them (which is the work of the producers most of the time).
    A boring backing track but quality rapping is really the lesser of two evils in my opinion when compared to the opposite.

    I know you're a massive 808 and heartbreaks fan, but I was really disappointing hearing Kanye using auto-tune so much. It was pretty good comparing it to say Lil' Wayne and T-Pain who use it just as avidly, but its not why I love Kanye. He shouldn't even be compared to both those artists.

    I really don't find much credibility for a rapper in using auto-tune.
