That goal dedicated to dad.
by Stefano Del Piero

I’m going to tell you about my brother Ale, the little one of the family that has become great, immensely great. I’ve seen him grow up, I’ve seen him become a player, then a man. Between us there has always been a special bond, one that exists between two boys of different ages, 9 years to be exact. He saw me, more than as a brother, as an example. We always shared the passion for football, a great love for the both of us. I started in the Sampdoria Primavera with Marcello Lippi, that was starting his career as a trainer. I didn’t become a professional, Ale did. Let’s say that my experience has been useful for him too. I’ve been a “dozer” (someone who prepares the way for someone else), more than a guinea pig. Our life was in the province, without tensions and exaggerations. And our life kept being normal. My parents, when I was in Genoa, didn’t have many chances to visit me; with Ale, on the opposite, was simpler, because Padova is not so far from San Vendemiano. Mom went every Thursday and we went together on Sundays. Dad worked, but he was his first supporter. For sure one cannot explain their bond with words. When Ale scored against Bari, after dad died, he had a strong reaction, almost an outburst. With the disease, the family had gotten closer, because it makes you understand lot of things. And Ale wanted to send a message. Dad was the one that brought Ale to the trainings, that followed the team without ever interfering in the technical matters, he kept to himself. For a young player is important to have a positive support from his parents, they can’t make other’s suppressed dreams come true. This was important to Ale, star to be. Then the injuries, that made his personality stronger. His greatest quality is, without any doubt, his determination, that is his anchor in the difficult moments. And there have been many. After the knee surgery, he came to face with a slow recovery. And this unsteadiness made him mature, made him become stronger. He was afraid that he couldn’t return to be the real Ale Del Piero, even with the reassurances he was given. But his luck has been having gone to Vail, to Prof. Steadman, an excellent surger, who gave us guarantees. And then Torino, his city. He has liked it from the very beginning, because of its peacefulness and discretion, never a problem, he feels great in Torino, he never feels suffocated by it. And the supporters adore him. It satisfies him deeply, also the choice he made thirteen years ago. He never did anything for the purpose of being loved by the fans, he knows only one way to win the people: the field. And on the field he’d want to fill that gap that the NT has had since 1982. He feels in his heart the desire to reach the highest aims. Never having won anything with the azzurra shirt stimulates him to try again with an even greater energy, because it saddens him, a lot. Ale has a thousand projects, maybe a future as a parent, I think he would like having someone around at home. When he was little he loved playing, he was always outside, often with a ball at his feet. Certainly he didn’t think he would reach a certain Giampiero Boniperti. He’s very proud of having succeeded, even if goals aren’t everything, in life. Ale has the strength of not putting himself before the team. And in the end Juve wins. And Del Piero wins too. Together forever.

If there are many mistakes I'm forgiven, 'cause it's 3 am here.
