Player of the Week: Del Piero (Juventus)
Dubbed as an "expensive luxury" on Friday, Alessandro Del Piero responded by ensuring that his beloved Juventus collected the points against Ascoli in Week 3. Making his seasonal debut for the Bianconeri, the captain scored both goals in his side’s 2-1 win against an opponent who did cause the Old Lady more problems than expected.

Having watched the win against Chievo from the bench, then the Empoli thrashing from the treatment table, Alex reminded everyone that he still has a part to play in Turin this season – even if he is now only the club’s third choice attacker behind David Trezeguet and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

It took a little time for Pinturrichio to find his brush at the Stadio Delle Alpi on Sunday. But as the minutes passed, the Italian did start to impose himself in front of his loyal fans. Having slotted home a penalty, Del Piero then curled in a free-kick which was ironically netted just seconds after Ibrahimovic got off the bench to start his warm up.

Del Piero’s exploits will now leave boss Fabio Capello with a slight conundrum ahead of Wednesday’s trip to Udine. Can the tactician possibly drop him from the side again after such a performance? With Ibrahimovic likely to return to the line-up, Alex will be in competition with Trezeguet for that last shirt in attack.

The 31-year-old is undoubtedly no longer the great player he once was, but he is someone that has always significantly contributed to every one of the Scudetti which have arrived in Turin during his stay. He may not play as often as he would like, Roma’s Antonio Cassano may also possibly be a better fit in Turin, but Del Piero is seemingly a luxury worth keeping for now – no matter how much he costs…

I think DP is on his way out anyways...his time at Juve has been slowly running out, and I wouldn't be surprise if we are without him next season. Unless DP is willing to sign a new contract as a rotation player instead of a key player.

Assorbe le polemiche come una spugna con l'acqua. E' incredibile Del Piero: gliene dicono di tutti i colori, lo sostituiscono in qualunque occasione. Lui alla prima chance buona, entra, ne fa due e alimenta le chiacchiere da domenica sportiva: "Una domenica alla quale sarebbe stato difficile chiedere di piu' - ammette il capitano della Juventus sul suo sito ufficiale -: alla gioia per la vittoria si aggiunge infatti la soddisfazione per aver segnato due reti. Sono davvero felice".

I do love DP for who he is and what he has done, so just listen.

Yesterday against Ascoli he did score 2 goals.
One penalty and one free kick. Other than that he did not do almost anything right.
Right now DP is a problem for us, cause he is not contributing with qualities on the pitch.
With him we loose paste, we loose the opportunity to play with a target player, we loose the ability with more space for the other players cause DP is not attracting as much attention from defense.

So we will not play with him in ANY game where we opposing a strong opponent ore playing a really important game. Trust me on this one…

He absorbs the polemics like a sponge does water. DP is incredible: they say all sorts of things about him, they slam him at every occasion. He, with his first good chance, enterred, and scored 2, and added to the Sunday sports buzz; "A Sunday from which it would be difficult to ask for anything more" --admitted the Juve Cap'n on his offical site--"to the joy of victory, we can add the satisfaction of putting up two nets (goals). I am truly happy."
