I made a whole thread about that a year, year and a half ago perhaps, called "Del Piero: a hero or a choker?". General consensus was that he's a choker.
True, Del Piero wasn't brilliant in every big game he played. Yet he has scored a lot against the likes of Roma, Inter and Real Madrid in his career. No, sir, Del Piero is no choker, he has won 5 scudetti and a CL for crying out loud. None of you would call Totti a choker, yet what has he ever done? Look at the stats for once. If Del Piero is a choker or a loser, then when are you going to be a winner?

More importantly, did you see DP against Lecce?

Absolutely awful, I could have done something against that defence.
So you're better than Del Piero? Hey, fine with me, but get your ass over to Turin and show us.

No. That's just plain ignorant. So called Del Piero lovers get to be bashed all the time for using "if" and "could have been", but now you're doing just the same. The fact is that Del Piero has brought us a lot of points this year, is our topscorer and has scored an incredible amount of goals throughout his career for Juve. So saying Del Piero has been shit this season means you know crap about football. He doés score, you know. And that's all he needs to do.
I know crap about football eh?

You think DP is great - that shows how much you know about football.

Please, just look at his performances. Are they worthy of Juventus?.....no. I know you want to believe he is good enough...but he's not.

I hope he goes at the end of the season. I've seen enough.

I don't care for his performances, I don't care for anything he does as long as he scores goals, and he does. His 12 goals have been of tremendous value for Juventus FC this season and no fan in the right state of mind should complain about Alessandro Del Piero. If you do complain, then you'll have to bash Zlatan, Trezeguet and Zalayeta as well. Not to mention Pavel Nedved. Where has he been this season?

Zlatan? Oh, you mean the 24 year-old who's played his first season in Italy and had a better debut season than 'the best finisher in the world'? That aside from his countless assists, of course.

Or maybe the useless Zalayeta should be slandered all over the boards. The 4th striker who never complains and receives wages that are pocket change to Del Piero? Oh that's right, never mind the fact that he makes substitute appearances in most of his matches, or that he's improved tenfold from previous seasons, or that he always gets the job done when called upon... :undecide:

Then you have Trezeguet and Nedved, who have been injured for most of the season. Now that can be a criticism in itself, but to judge them based on their few performances is a bit harsh, don't you think? btw Nedved was absolutely pivotal in the former stages of our campaign before his injury.

So was Trezeguet before his surgery

Gray, read my post again. I meant to say Del Piero shouldn't be bashed, nor those other players. It's ridiculous to complain that much about your top goalscorer. It doesn't matter how or when he scores, what's important is that he scores. And statistically speaking (which is the only objective possibility) Del Piero has been one of our best players.

Substitution saddens Del Piero
Monday 18 April, 2005

Juventus are back in control of the Scudetto race but captain Alessandro Del Piero is not a happy man.

The No 10 left the Delle Alpi with a long face on Sunday after he was substituted at half-time during the 5-2 win over Lecce.

"It is clear that Del Piero wasn’t happy but the fact that players are replaced is part of the game," stated director general Luciano Moggi.

"We know that Alex is a champion and that is clear by the amount of goals he has scored this season.

"There are no doubts over his ability as a player, but when he’s not in great form then it is right that he is substituted."

The Italian has been recalled to the bench frequently this term, after seemingly failing to convince boss Fabio Capello of his ability.

Although Del Piero has scored 15 goals – 12 in the League, three in Europe – he has only finished five Serie A games and two Champions’ League matches.

"I decided to take Del Piero off at half-time after evaluating the first 45 minutes," explained Capello yesterday evening.

"I have a squad at my disposal and that is what I base my team selections on, even if I can make mistakes."

Capello was perhaps hinting at the fact that Marcelo Zalayeta, who replaced Del Piero, didn’t have a great game against Lecce.

You'd think that headline would read -

ABSOLUTELY DIRE PERFORMANCE SADDENS DEL PIERO.

How can he not have expected to be subbed after that?!

Gray - I agree with all your posts.

Seven - I think you need help.

So does anyone who dares to state that Del Piero is not that bad this season apparently. What the hell is wrong with you people? He's our topscorer. That's it, read it again. He's our topscorer. You simply can't bash your topscorer all the time. His goals this season have made a lot of points for us AND THOSE ARE ****ING FACTS. Every thing you have said in this thread so far is SUBJECTIVE while it is a FACT that Del Piero has scored 12 goals.

Some people here are getting owned in this little debate.
You're probably talking about me, but seriously Monkfish is yet to state an argument on why Del Piero has been useless this season.
