It's not about who the better player is and Raz is actually right for the first time in his life. Neither Baggio nor Zizou deserve that either, both have achieved more personal awards than Alex has. None of the mentioned players, despite their legendary status, could come close to being an icon for the club who has always been full of great stars, before and after Platini. 20 years of playing for the team and achieving everything with the team, becoming the symbol of the club and the player people around the world would instantly think of the moment they hear the club's name, Alex has become our brand, our most celebrated player and undoubtedly, our most loved player by the fans even though there have been better players than him at different eras.
Doesn't justify retiring his shirt number.

I don't remember being mentioned, but Del Piero is the longest lasting captain of Juventus. The previous record of Giuseppe Furino (10 full seasons and plus some matches) is held by Del Piero now, who's playing his 11th season as a club captain.

I've mentioned it before. If not for that injurey back in 1999 it would've been even longer, no? Because if I'm not wrong Conte was appointed then as an emergency captain until 2001.

You have to remember that some here care for Del Piero above Juventus, so club traditions come secondary.

It could even be something as subtle but respectful as putting the initials of such a player in the number itself. I don't want to see future players not given the chance to wear certain numbers, it's an American gimmick in sports where it's normal to have numbers like 88 and 90. Juventus do not do that, our players do not wear basketball numbers, it's 1-30 and then the kids, that's our tradition. Buffon used to wear 77 and 88 at Parma, when he came to Juventus he was told he would wear number 1.
It has nothing to do with how I or anyone else rate the club's traditions. It's a personal preference, whether you are for or against it, your reasons are regardless of whether or not Juve intend to do it. Juve might have retired Scirea's jersey and you would have still found it absurd, it would only mean that club traditions come secondary to your personal opinion.

I'm not usually for retiring numbers but with Del Piero, it's different. A question is asked, every fan can have their own point of view. It's not something to cry over.

Conte was captain from 1996 until 2001. So, he was already a captain in 1999. But it could be true that the injury is the reason why didn't Del Piero become a captain before 2001.

Wasn't Conte captain too? That would make DP captain only after him 2004?

You should say it to NBA e NHL fans, especially to Chicago Bulls e Edmonton Oilers fans

Can you imagine that somebody could wear 33 number for boston celtics? LOL there is only one Larry Bird
In this case after a long time no one number will be available to wear. I think it is stupid too, there are much more of ways to show a respect to the players.

I don't intend to convince you or justify retiring numbers. All I have said with regards to the question is that no one deserves to have that shirt and in that post, point was to show the difference between Del Piero' status and those of the likes of Platini and Zizou who have been better players than Alex.

Then just watch, how Juve will keep the traditions and not retire the number.
