The title is misleading. He never hit back at Ciro. He was asked about Ciro's interview and he responded in the best way IMO. He actually tried to justify what Ciro said (despite himself denying it). What did he try to prove you think? He just replied to what Ciro had said about him loving to play. How can he prove Ciro wrong on the pitch in this regards?

Del Piero hits back at Ferrara Friday 16 July, 2010

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero has hit back at Ciro Ferrara after his former team-mate and Coach criticised him in an interview last month.

Ferrara told La Gazzetta dello Sport that he thought Del Piero was a difficult character to deal with in the dressing room because he always wanted to play.

He also called the players 'donkeys' after they failed to turn their season around under Alberto Zaccheroni.

“I believe that that interview was done at a particularly emotional moment,” Del Piero said.

“I am not saying that to justify Ferrara's comments, but I believe it was like that. Certainly none of us at Juventus feel like donkeys.”

When asked if he did want to play all the time, Del Piero said: “The problem is if a player doesn't want to play.

“A player must do everything - obviously only on the pitch - to be a started. But I never asked anyone to start regularly. I only asked to be looked at without prejudice and that I be treated equal with the others. It's my way of thinking and of seeing the situation.

“If a player deserves to play, whether he be 18 or 36, he should play, because the best players should be on the pitch. The fundamental thing is that the team wins. I have always behaved correctly in the dressing room. For my part, there has always been maximum openness and the utmost desire to do well.”

Del Piero then turned his attention to the season ahead.

“We don't have particular objectives,” he said. “The only objective is to get to the end of the season proud of what we have done.

“We must concentrate on getting back to being Juve. In my opinion, this has to be the focal point of our season.”

gee what a surprise!! but this only makes me respect ranieri even more as a man.

Ale really let me down with those comments. While what Ciro said was stupid, hitting back at him is unprofessional in its own right. Firstly, the players didn't really help either of the coaches during the previous season, secondly, a true professional would prove Ciro wrong on the pitch, and not during a press conference.
He didn't really hit back though. You could even say he defended Ciro as things could have gotten far more ugly than this.

For what it's worth: I do think Ferrara, at the time, was not equipped to deal with Del Piero. Not even because of Del Piero's character, but because of his name.

Most people would not have read it if it weren't for the title.

I for example am not usually interested in what DP would have to say, but because of the title, i got interested and i read the article.

Non-Juventus fans you mean? Usually Juve fans do read what Ale has to say.

True.

The problem is that every player wants to play. Mario Stanic, an ex-Croat player, once said something like "Every player thinks that he is the best and that he deserves to play". Del Piero is no different. Of course that he wants to play all the time and that he will ask the coach to play. Whoever criticizes Del Piero for this is overreacting.
But that's why the coach should make the final decision and have the control. If Ciro wasn't strong enough and didn't have enough authority to say no to Del Piero then he shouldn't moan afterwards. Ciro only made himself look weak after those comments.

Del piero said what he has to say and in the best possible way. I am sad that Ciro a person I liked talked in such way about Alex and the whole team, but the pressure of being a Juven manager and then failing was too big for him to withstand. Hopefully he learned from this experiment, and would come back to benefit him in the future if he get a job as a coach at a big club

Ferrara is real donkey, he firstly said unnecessary internal deal of team at press conference on October of last season that Diego not acting like as he asked him on field. After then, team's performance is crashed and perhaps players had started distanced from him. I think that he said all this strange things to press to push away blames from him.

If that's the case, then the players are just as much at fault as Ferrara.

I remember that press conference. It's not like Ciro called his mother a whore or something.
