I was thinking about the same incident :lol2:

If a great captain is one who admits that he wanted to injure players on the field, then I'm sorry Del Piero is not a great captain. If a great captain is one who lets his team mates run around and intimidate the ref and mock him on the field, then I'm sorry Del Piero isn't one.

But if a great captain is one who commands respect without having to utter a word, bring fear to the opponents hearts without showing a sign of anger on his face, if a great captain is one whom even the opponents fans respect, then Del Piero definitely is one. I don't know if he's the best captain in the world, because its not quantifiable. But he's definitely one of the best. To put the likes of Terry, Ballack, Roy Keane over him is ignorant and stupid.
Even the opponent's fans???? The majority of italians I know, respect DP, as a nice chap, but as a footballer, his star has been on the wane for a few years now. Basing this on the Madrid game. They applauded him for his technique, and yes, he does inspire others, through his flair and decency. its far more ignorant and stupid to suggest that DP brings fear to the hearts of opponents. The opinion of DP outside of Juventus world, is not on a Great Captain, who galvanises the troops, and who strikes fear into opponents. That is simply...bullshit... to pretend its true anywhere other than in your head and heart, and likely loins.

And yes, the madrid fans paid him homage. for his goals, for his history. NOT for his amazing abilities as captain. They are not one and the same...this is why I say its pitiful to use in this argument. Because I could find a few hundred thousand fans of various clubs, juventus included, who would laugh at the suggestion of DP striking fear into the hearts of opponents. And I would laugh with them. because its ridiculous. Buffon is more of a captain, he shows more passion, more determination, and demands more respect, from me, and those around him...

Can you honestly tell me that any footie fan that has some sort of football knowledge would not be fearful, if DP was taking a free kick in a 25m radius. against their team?

Italians know he's a free kick specialist

watching a bit of the juve games ... i would rather led del piero take goal kicks than freekicks ... when was the last goal by a freekick that was not an goalie error ?

last season was a different story though, but the last freekicks of him where really crap

I am not a big fan of DP to be honest, but I do respect him as a great captain and a great leader of Juventus.

The gutterpoet is right that being nice can be lame sometimes and I do agree that you need some aggressive, bit dirty and warrior-like players on the pitch. These players are those who can inspire others to fight hard and do whatever they can for a victory.

But Del Piero has been inspiring this team by his decency and with him as a benchmark, you wouldn't see unprofessional players like Balotelli, Adriano, Cassano etc. Our players are mostly nice guys on and off the pitch. You can be right that being nice can make us too soft sometimes. But the decency showed by our captain and our players can win the respect of everyone which is not something you can find in Terry, Keane etc.

In his past, his free kicks were world class...though I haven't seen much evidence of this during the current season. Also...you are focusing on his technique, rather than his character. And for me, a Captain needs a certain steel of spirit. No, I do not think that DP makes opponents fearful whenever we get a free kick within range. I would be more scared if Camo was around, due to the potential quality of his deliveries into the box, hit with speed, swerve and accuracy. How many free kicks has DP scored this season???? But the point is the same. It does not make him a good captain, if he is great at free kicks. if anything, i think opponents like to play against him now, more than for instance, Iaquinta. because the locomotive is harder to stop, and creates more opportunities, through sheer willpower and determination.

The only players in our team with the characteristics to be my idea of a swashbuckling captain, are Buffon, and Chiellini...though Giorgio is a little too playful perhaps.
