One bad game, let's bench him. People don't seem to realize that, that could be said about every single player in every match and that's football, not everyone will be consistent because of tactics, opposition and fatigue.

Oh look, Buffon had a bad game, let's bench him. Oh look, Trezeguet had a bad game, he's not fit, let's bench him. Oh...Giovinco had a bad game, let's bench him. Oh wow, Sissoko had a bad game, let's bench him

Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero says he is doing everything to persuade Italy boss Marcello Lippi to take him to the World Cup.

The 35-year-old wasn't included in Lippi's latest squad for last night's friendly against Cameroon in Monte Carlo, but he has been playing well recently.

“I am still chasing a dream. I have splendid examples in front of me. It's clear that my dream is called the World Cup,” Del Piero said.

“The Italy shirt is the greatest aspiration for an athlete and to represent your country at a World Cup is an indescribable joy.

“I have played a lot for Italy, also going through some bad moments, but then everything was put right with the great emotion of winning the World Cup in 2006.

“I will focus on it,” he concluded.
