Del Piero feels like a little boy
Juventus captain Alessandro Del Piero insists his fitness problems are now behind him and that he is not too old to win a place in Marcello Lippi's World Cup squad.
The 34-year-old World Cup winner has yet to start for the Bianconeri so far this season after suffering a back and then a thigh injury.
Speaking on becoming an Ambassador for Sport, Del Piero said: “I hope that I am not on holiday in June, but there is still time to speak about La Nazionale and the World Cup.
“Meanwhile, I am ready for Sunday's game. My season can finally begin. We have to do well. Then, as always, it will depend on us.”
Asked if he would struggle to win a regular place in Juventus' first team, Del Piero replied: “There really isn't a problem.
“I haven't any kind of worry about the system. I am only thinking about being ready. I have already spoken with Ferrara. He will use me as best as he believes.
Del Piero also reiterated his belief that Juventus' new habit of playing just one striker wouldn't keep him on the sidelines.
“I believe that my characteristics are those of a striker. But there is the utmost willingness on my part to do anything even if, on the inside, every single player has his own qualities and peculiarities. But I repeat, on the formation, and any other thing, I am not in the least bit confused.”
Finally Del Piero reflected on his chances of making Lippi's World Cup squad.
“Lippi knows what to do. He'll have until June to choose another six players to take to South Africa.”
Asked to describe how he felt, Del Piero replied: “Like a little boy.”
