Excellent call there ;).

It's not really hard for a player like DP to make a difference, if the people you're replacing are called Toni or Gilardino. Seldomly have I seen a player with such limited capabilities as Toni get this far at club level and in a national team. ( of a 'big' football-country ). I'm not really an Azzurri fan, because I'm not Italian, but I get annoyed when I watch people mess up with every ball they get, when one of my beloved Juventus players could be there doing their thing. :juventus:
Its heartbreaking to see Toni getting soo many chances and failing repeatedly. When was the last time DP got a good run of games with the Azzuri.....there`s a horrible bias against him when he plays for the NT!

Canna defends his place Tuesday 23 June, 2009

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro insists he is not just in the squad because he lifted the World Cup three years ago.

The 35-year-old Juventus defender had a nightmare of a performance against Brazil on Sunday night.

He was clearly at fault for the first goal in a 3-0 defeat, which put Italy out of the Confederations Cup.

Cannavaro missed a fairly standard clearance and in doing so gave Luis Fabiano a chance to score. He duly obliged.

The Italian Press have railed against the team, blaming Lippi's reliance on veteran players.

“Enough already with this story about the old players. By now, it's become a fashion. If I bother you, my place is at your disposition,” Cannavaro said.

“But Lippi is the one who decides. I am not here just because I lifted the World Cup.

“Everyone has in mind the seven games I played in Germany in 2006 and in comparison with them I always play bad.

“But like Lippi I believe that the players here are the best our football can offer at the moment,” he added.

“I don't see any phenomenal players doing the rounds in Italian football at the moment. There are no more Tottis, Baggios or Del Pieros.:frown: :disagree:

“We need to rebuild and not only La Nazionale. Let's start with the infrastructure, the stadiums and also the academies.

“Today it's enough for a defender to be a tall good looking blond who dribbles and thinks he can play,” Cannavaro said.

The former World Player of the Year then insisted he has no problem with Antonio Cassano receiving a call up in the future.

The Bari brat wasn't selected for the Confederations Cup despite another excellent campaign for Sampdoria.

Some believe Italy's 'old guard' didn't want him in the squad, an allegation Cannavaro denies.

“It's not true that the group didn't want him. We are all tied to Antonio. I have told him many times that he has paid for his errors.

“Lippi decides, but in Genoa he has found tranquillity and a girlfriend. I hope he does well next year and then he can come with La Nazionale. He has the qualities to be here,” Cannavaro concluded.

Me thinks there is still one phenonmenal player in Serie A "doing the rounds"... His name is Alex Del Piero!!:luckyluke:

It's a process that Italy has to go through. They dont have to change the whole team for the WC. Players like Santon, Rossi, Amauri, D'Ago, Marchisio could prove next season to be good enough to play a role in the WC.

Then there are players like Giovinco, Criscito, Motta, Bocchetti, Santacroce, Acquafresca, Balotelli etc who have the potential to take over after 2010.

That is so true. You can't expect a direct "transformation" with younger footballers.

have to disagree there Rab, Mario is one unbelievable player...he has some serious issues, but I have no doubt that very soon this guy will become one of the 10 best players in the world

He sure has the talent & physical qualities to become one of the best, but I'm not so sure this wil actually happen.

I just think (hope) he might screw everything up for himself. It sure looks like he has the tendency to create a lot of unnecessary trouble & he is, by far, the most arrogant player I ever had "the pleasure" of watching live. Something his teammates may get tired of sooner or later.

:agree:

He reminds me of a young Wayne Rooney. When he broke through, tons of people were tackling him like crazy, and he was just a cocky ass about it all. When you're a teenager and everyone tells you you're amazing, well, it tends to go to your head.

Balotelli is anything but a special player. He's good but I don't see him becoming one of the best. He's too lazy.

You two better stop mentioning this disgrace in the Del Piero thread.

Consider it a final warning, next time I'll ban both of you:turk: :D

Do you guys think that, realistically, DP has a good chance of getting to play in WC2010? I personally think that if he doesn't absolutely dominate and play the football of his life in the fall next season he has sadly no chance of getting picked.
