It looks like I may have provoked ZAF to restate DP's whole history in the national team.

I've always been very sympathetic to the arguments made in his favor, but in fairness the critics have a point. He's played in more tournaments than most players and he's never been clinical.
Unlucky Martin, unlucky. Had he scored vs France in the Finals of 2000, if only he scored that chance he would have turned things upside down.

I believe he has done his job, not clinical like you said because of the roles he was given IMO. But he has done his job most of the times.

Yeah, but every player is judged on the same merits and every player is subject to the same potential difficulties. If it was Gilardino instead would you been making these excuses?
Sad but true. But then again, people don't expect from Gila like they expect from Ale. Sometimes I feel I could be the wrong biased person but I still don't understand how can someone like Del Piero not be given a role where he has always shined since his first Juve game up till now. Just give him the role he wants and then we will all shut it if he doesn't perform. But give him his preferred role.

Even Lippi didn't give him that role in WC 06. Weird, really weird.

He's been riddled with confidence issues most of his career and nowhere did they become so apparent as when he played for Italy. That explains a lot I think. Then he manage to overcome that, at least when playing for us, but not in the national team.

well lippi had a hot form luca toni...you couldn't start italy's 11 without him in those days. But DP needed to be a 2nd choise for sure. I donno my friends...the more i speak about dp's past and present for azzuri, the more i get sad. It's sad cuz you see the stats, you see how he's playing for juve, you see what "future" we have in the attacking line. I'm sad cuz dp's on holiday now...and the man who called him his golden boy...his best player that he coached gave him that holiday.

And about Gilardino (martin)..i am defending dp here...and anyway gila is overrated by everyone, including the coaches that trained italy.

That was the worst tournament of all. None of the teams I liked got anywhere, France didn't score a single goal
Worst indeed. Worst referees ever, worst matches(boring ones). Batistuta retiring, Italy KO from Korea, Spain undeservedly left the tournament as-well.

And what a final, Brazil-Germany :mute:

Indeed, horrible final. At least Germany didn't win, that would have been worse.

After Italy had self destructed Spain did the very same thing in that penalty shootout. Of course they had goals disallowed too. Awful stuff. And the Belgians scored against Brazil but the goal didn't stand.

Good memory. I was pissed like never, disallowed goal that would have eliminated Brazil from their 5th star.
