Del Piero played well in the world cup then Donadoni came. He played him as LM against brazil at team with pace and speed. Ofcourse he did not show what he's got. BUT IN FAIRNESS SAKE, the whole national team was a joke that day. You really cannot blame alex for that. So he did not pick him until Euro 2008 where he was a second choice (imagine this.. DP as a second choice, what has the world gone to).

During the WC06 qualification, Del Piero was crucial for italy to reach the finals. He played an important role and he lead italy in the 4-1 friendly victory over Germany where he excelled. In Euro 2004 he was given the starting role when Totti decided to show his manners. He played very well. In WC 2002 he wasn't give a chance. But in the Mexico game when he came in as a sub he scored. Against Korea he was a starter. Italy were leading. He was keeping the Korean defense and midfield at their field just by his presence. He was marked by at least 3 men in that game. Then the coach decided hmm dp is not playing well lets take him off. Surprise surprise. Korea's occupied players are now free and they attacked a poor italy with everything they've got. And won. Nobody seems to mention that DPs exit has cost Italy the game. Further backward, In Euro 2000. Del Piero was playing well and scored a wonderful goal against Sweden. Then in the Final he had an off goal especially with his two wasted chances. Although many players in the past have wasted even easier chances DP was cursed by the media afterwards like there is no tomorrow and they forgot that he was one of the main reasons Italy had had reached the final that year. In World Cup 1998 DP was recovering from Injury suffered by the in humane (later on twisted around and distroyed at the 02-03 semi final) Hiero. Yet he had good games and assisted a number of goals. Its not his fault that Di Biaggio wasted that PK against franch.

They call Baggio a god, where he only scored 2 goals (or is it 1 now) more than DP. Where DP has assisted more (I would presume).

He might not have played for Italy as well as Juventus, but thats just for a simple reason, In JUVENTUS he is playing in HIS POSITION. While in Italy in many occasions he's been put off position.

Bah, he stopped scoring for Italy. Just stopped completely. From what I remember in the last games he played he was very poor.

It's so sad that he could never match his Juve form.
TBH he wasn't that bad against Romania. And he was lively against Spain as well. Should have been introduced way sooner.

He was isolated vs Romania. I remember not a single pass he received in the first 30min.

Against Spain, he looked fresh but kinda late that was.
He was isolated versus Romania, but he didn't do enough. He wasn't awful, but he really should have done better. Overall Donadoni was just a very poor coach though. No way Italy could have done anything with him in charge.

It looks like I may have provoked ZAF to restate DP's whole history in the national team.

I've always been very sympathetic to the arguments made in his favor, but in fairness the critics have a point. He's played in more tournaments than most players and he's never been clinical.
