What's with Ale's contract extension. I've red some crap article on Channel4 how he could leave us. I highly doubt it, and I think that they took that article from Tuttoshit.

La Liga tempts Del Piero
Monday 15 June, 2009
Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero would be tempted by a move to Spain, considering that contract negotiations with his current club are yet to begin.

Del Piero will see his contract expire in June 2010, when he will be 35-year-old with a potential market value of £10m.

“This is a problem which sooner or later we will have to face, but there is still time to think about it,” said sporting director Alessio Secco.

The Bianconeri Captain is reluctant to push for a renewal as he is expecting the club to make the first step at the negotiation table.

Despite his wish to end his career in Turin offers from La Liga, as well as the USA and China, could make him change his mind.

The same happened to Pavel Nedved who wasn’t offered a new contract and is now on the verge of joining either Lazio or Parma.

“The next season will be fundamental for Alex,” confessed President Giovanni Cobolli Gigli.

“He will be super motivated to play at the World Cup and he will need regular playing time. Still there will be time until the June 30, 2010 to sign a new contract,” concluded the patron.

But June 2010 could already be too late to keep the Bianconeri No 10 at the Olimpico as he would be free to look for a new team come January.

Seriously, i know it, you know it, Secco knows it, Del Piero knows it, the guys from channel4 know it and the guy who wrote the initial article in Gazzetta knows that this is BS and Del Piero will sign a new contract when the time comes.
IIRC Del Piero himself said that there is no rush to sign the contract. We're in the middle of the summer mercato, trying to create a team capable of winning the scudetto, and we can't lose time.
From September we'll talk about new contracts with our players.

But of course, they just have to write how Del Piero might leave Juve :howler:

I've never read from the Berlusconi media and this AC Milan newspaper called Gazzetta dello sport saying how Maldini might leave Milan or even how Zanetti might leave Inter, but when it's about Del Piero, they are always the first ones "selling" Del Piero to Milan, a MLS team, La Liga team.

The probably get a kick out of it. Spreading stupid rumors that they know someone will believe. And then they sit back in satisfaction that they know the whole thing is spin.

The truth is not interesting when too many people know it. It pays to put out false stories just to stir up the confusion a bit.

They don't even mention a club. I disagree with what you say about la Gazzetta though. It's more objective than people consider it to be around here. It's also the first paper to praise Alex when the time comes.

Gazzetta is the only Italian newspaper i actually read for the last 2-3 years. They are by far more reliable than the others. They have better writers too.
But the AC Milan bias and the anti-Juve bias can be annoying from time to time. Almost as annoying as the Juve bias bordering lunacy that can be seen in Tuttosport.

As long as he doesn't expect to be a starter until 40, I am fine with a one year extension (to be revised annually). He is no spring chicken anymore, and I don't want us turning into Milan and chasing away our youngters.

as long as he gives 22 goals per season and a tone of assists/moral boost/midfield work...he can play until 50, i don't give a f**k about age.

True, it's not the age that matters, but what one does on the pitch, and until there isn't someone who can do better then him I say we should start him.

Why shouldn't he expect to start? Have you even tried looking at his stats for the last 3years?

Of course I should have expected this kind of emotional response from the Del Piero Fan boys and Dick Riders. Did you even bothering reading my post?

I am not disputing that he should be a starter next season, but I do mind him being a starter when he is 40 (if he plays until then), or even at 38-39. Players need to know when to let go, and allow others into the fold. He may still be giving us a lot by then, but someone else with more potential, and who may arguably be able to give more, may run the risk of being left out or overlooked (and no, I am not necessarily referring to Gio).
