Yes, he will play him as a wide midfielder (because Donadoni thinks he can play in that position) and eventually he will be subbed and not used anymore
I don't think he will. I'm pretty sure he knows he is useless in that position. Cassano and Del Piero can play as support strikers like:

Cassano---Del Piero
Toni

with Del Piero being a little more advanced than Cassano.

del piero should play instead of 'of christmas'
Not really. Del piero can't play well on the flanks. You need to be very fast to be able to play well on the flanks, Del piero isn't. If Donadoni decides to go on a more traditional 4-4-2, then I think Ale and Toni should definitely be selected as first choices.

However, as long as Donadrone opts for a 4-3-3, Ale will only come on as a sub.

i think currently del piero is in fanastic shape an shown he has speed, he can provide much better service to toni as well, if anyone remembers the 2003 qualifier v wales in san siro, ale was class on the left wing, lets not forget in his younger days in 94-96 he was on the left wing

Hopefully Alex gets some playing time tomorow night to try and impress the coach. I think a lot has changed since he said he wouldnt play on the left flank. He looks a lot faster and seems to have more stamina now than he did at the start of the season, this can make him a better wing player. I think even if Del Piero plays up front he spends a lot of time on the wings anyway!

When Del piero is played on the wings like he was most recently against France, he will not play at his best and that's a fact. First of all, it's not even his position, second, he doesn't have the pace he had 10 years ago.

Del piero's game is largely dependant on his vision and experience rather than his speed and flair. That's not unusual since he is 34 afterall. Adapting to a position on the left wing where he is obviously uncomfortable playing in is no easy task. Let's not forget that Italy aren't exactly going to be playing against teams that lack in quality.

At Juve, Alex has a lot more freedom. He can drop back to help out the midfield and go wide at the wing if he pleases. He can also play alongside Trez for 90 mins, that's entirely up to him. He doesn't have that freedom when he plays for Italy, at least not in a 4-3-3 formation.

He would be isolated at the left wing with very little space to create anything. His only way of attacking would be by beating his man and despite his great form and outstanding skill, he lacks the speed to do so.

It's hard to imagine Alex starting in a 4-3-3 although I hope he does and proves me wrong because frankly, that's the only way Donadrone is going to play this competition.

Zizou played a lot of his career on the left flank and he wasn't the quickest...Ale is most effective when he is running the game, that is when his vision, accuracy and technique are truly seen...

Del Piero Steals Di Natale’s Dutch Place?
According to the Italian bookmakers, Alessandro Del Piero will be preferred to Antonio Di Natale for the Azzurri’s first match of Euro 2008 against Holland.

Italy open up their Group C campaign against the Dutch in Berne on June 9, and the speculation has already started as to what starting XI Coach Roberto Donadoni will select.

Donadoni’s 4-3-3 system will almost certainly, barring injuries, see Luca Toni play at centre forward, with Mauro Camoranesi on the right.

Antonio Di Natale was originally believed to be the favourite to take the left-side role, having played in that position in the final qualifying games, and in the recent friendly matches against Portugal and Spain.

However Di Natale has come under threat ever since Donadoni named both Alex Del Piero and Antonio Cassano in his Euro 2008 squad.

According to the Italian bookmakers, Del Piero will win the race to start against Holland, with Di Natale and Cassano having to settle for places on the bench.

Christian Panucci will also be preferred to Fabio Grosso in defence, allowing Gianluca Zambrotta to take up his left back role, while Gennaro Gattuso is preferred to Milan club colleague Massimo Ambrosini in midfield.

Team to face Holland according to Italian bookmakers: (4-3-3). Buffon, Panucci, Cannavaro, Barzagli, Zambrotta, Gattuso, Pirlo, De Rossi, Camoranesi, Toni, Del Piero.

Donadoni Favours Trident Again

Italy manager Roberto Donadoni will continue with a three-pronged attack in the side’s friendly with Belgium, their final warm-up match before the start of Euro 2008.

Though the system looked ineffective at times during Italy’s qualification campaign, Luca Toni is likely to line-up as a lone striker, supported on the wings by recalled duo Alessandro Del Piero and Antonio Cassano.

The 44-year old has spoken in recent weeks of the need for flexibility within the Azzurri’s formation, a requirement he looks set to develop in Friday’s game.

"We will start off with the trident even if we decide upon the actual lineup in training tomorrow morning," Donadoni told reporters.

"Those two [Del Piero and Cassano] are in good condition and this makes me happy. We will try to let everyone play a little.”

Italy are among the favourites to secure another European Championship in Austria and Switzerland along with France, Spain and Portugal.

good news i suppose.

from official site;

These days program consisted of numerous trainings and institutional engagements, that are necessary in this stage of preparation for European Championship in Switzerland and Austria.

On the 30th of May 2008, Friday, we will be playing in Florence at the Franchi Stadium, friendly match Italy against Belgium which starts at 20.50.

On the 31st of May, Saturday, we will have the day off, preparing for the comeback on the 1st of June and next day departure to Baden! This Austrian city, situated not far from Vienna, will be our training session headquarters, while the trainings will take place at Sudstadt Stadium in Enzesdorf, where the Admira Wacker team is playing now.

This team was among the first ones I met in the European pitch during UEFA CUP 1994/1995 (24th November 1994 Admira Wacker vs Juventus 1-3)... Let it be a good sign!

See you soon,

Alessandro
