Del Piero To Go To Euro 2008? Panini Says Yes
Speculation is growing that Alessandro Del Piero will indeed travel to this summer’s European Championships after the player was included in Panini’s Euro 2008 sticker album.
The Juventus forward has not played for Italy since September last year, and with just one friendly remaining before Roberto
Donadoni names his squad for Austria and Switzerland, there are doubts if Del Piero will be included.
A World Cup or a European Championship would not be the same without a Panini sticker album, and the Modena-based firm have released the 20 names that will be on the Italy page of their Euro 2008 book.
The four strikers that get the nod are Luca Toni, Antonio Di Natale, Fabio Quagliarella, and Del Piero.
There is no place for Sampdoria’s Antonio Cassano, Marco Borriello, Alberto Gilardino, Vincenzo Iaquinta or Raffaele Palladino.
Donadoni actually names 23 players for his final squad, whereas Panini only has enough space for 20.
Whilst the album gives an idea of those likely to be called-up, it is far from reliable.
In World Cup 2006 Christian Vieri was in the album, even though he eventually didn’t travel to Germany. Meanwhile in France 98, Gianfranco Zola, Fabrizio Ravanelli and Pier Luigi Casiraghi were all in the sticker book, though all three were eventually snubbed, or missed out due to injury.
