Gila expected Berlin date Wednesday 5 July, 2006
Alberto Gilardino insists he’s not surprised that Italy have reached the 2006 World Cup Final.

“We said before this adventure began that the Final was our objective and we got there with determination, humility, great character and some good football,” said the Milan man.

“We always believed in ourselves, as the team spirit is responsible for 80 per cent of this victory. All the strikers scored in this tournament and proved their worth when called upon.”

Gilardino started the game on the bench, but made an impact on the match by striking the post and then setting up Italy’s second goal for Alex Del Piero.

“It’s a shame my shot hit the post, but then the goals came and it didn’t matter anymore,” said the £17m man.

“As for the final strike, I was running at my man, but then heard Alex’s voice and rolled it across.”:D
Gilardino also praised boss Marcello Lippi for making each member of the side feel important by keeping his cards close to his chest.

“The Coach always keeps us on tenterhooks until the last minute to give us the line-up and that’s very important to keep everyone in the loop,” he assured.

Angry Alex still delighted Wednesday 5 July, 2006
Alessandro Del Piero has admitted that his goal celebration in Italy’s win over Germany was filled with more anger than joy.

The Juventus captain erupted after sliding the ball into the back of the net with the last kick of the game to see the Azzurri through to the World Cup Final.

“My celebration was more anger than joy at first, caused by many things it’s better not to talk about now, but it turned into happiness for this Final,” he said.

Del Piero has been something of an enigma during his international career after failing to reproduce his club form for the Azzurri.

But although he is no longer guaranteed a starting shirt for Italy, he’s delighted that he is still of some use.

“Many times goals come out of difficulties and determination, so my enjoyment is tripled,” he stated. “If you don’t play much and still score, then that’s extra special.”

Del Piero was introduced in the second period of extra-time as the Azzurri looked to avoid going to penalties.

And he sealed the win by basically running the length of the field, without the ball, to ensure a memorable 2-0 victory.

“If it’s balanced until four minutes from the end of extra-time, then it had to be tough. As the away side and with everything happening, we had it all against us,” he added.

“I called for the ball from midfield! I was a long way back, but Gilardino did well to hold up the ball and hear me call again when I got closer.”

Who said Del Piero coming off the bench would be bad??? I never said that...All I said is that there is no diff between starting the game and coming as a Sub, specially for Alex as hes eager more than anyone else to do something. I'm glad he managed to score, yet I still think he should start the final alongside Totti.

i think lippi has got his mind set already....i think he will field the same line-up as against the germans. my only guess would be to start gilla instead of luca because he didnt play that great......

na i would say he was just happy to silence everyone in the media, more then whats going on back home.
I'm sure it's the scandal. Because this is what he can't talk about but of course feels strongly about. He's so emotional and proud of juventus success. also this you quoted puts it in perspective. It's all about the scandal and everything. Not his critics which he's used to.

"The Juventus lads were magnificent," said forward Alessandro Del Piero, who scored Italy's second goal after coming on as a substitute. "You could say that that was the latest riposte to what we 'Juventini' have had to take.

alex is my fav player but lippi have build the starting line up with his tactics from the beginning of the world cup and italy growing in every match they play and alex can enter the field only when things get complicated because totti doing great job with his killer through passes hes making the defenders line droped deeper to thier goal because from one long pass he can kill the game... did anyone realise the defenders run fast and fouled totti many times before he even turn his face on italy strickers???
and not saying that totti is better than del piero but del piero is hardly selected by lippi

i think the anger part is got more to do with the way he was made a scapgegoat for italy's loss at euro2000 and how he's underperformed at national level over the years.he missed two opportunies against germany, and i had a sick feeling that he was choking, but then came that cool finish.great stuff.

4-4-1-1 would be good against the French, Zidane and the wingers come forward, while the counter-attack is all on Totti's head. If nothing happens, than Alex will come and do something, no doubt it.
