Not really. Henry and Shevchenko are both forwards, similar enough to Del Piero. And besides, it doesnt matter if they are the same kind of player, what matters is if you can seriously say that Del Piero is in the same class with Henry, Shevchenko or Eto'o?

Well currently not,you are right about that.
But they are not the same age Henry 1977, Eto'o 1981,and Del Piero 1974....so I should ask you is Van Basten in he same class with Henry or Eto'o.

I dont understand this comparing ages and classes.

First of all, about the CL finals, I personally think with Nedved and without Del Piero we would have won, that season Nedved really linked our midfield to our forwards and was worldclass hence european footballer.

As for DP being compared to Schevchenko, Henry...I think DP could have been compared to them before the injury but certainly not after.

The thing that we probably all agree on is that DP is a good role model and respectable leader. But his footballing performances haven't been great after '98 by my books.

So you are saying that after '98 Del Piero was world class? That he was in the same league as Henry, Shevchenko, or Ronaldinho now for example?
How do you clasify world class ? Problem here is that you are sounding much cathegorical about some terms. And if we come to that, any player that has been selected to form major national teams (brasil, italy ,argentina, etc)can be considered world class.
Does Henry was world class when he was at Juventus ? Can a player be world class one season and not the next? Is Nedved or Ibra world class?

If we talk with the experts in football around the world, then, yes, DP is world class, even if he hasnt rise to the expectatives many people had made about his career.

A more focused aproach to the question could be ...Does DP is still really useful to Juventus ?

My subjective and very personal opinion is yes, he can be very useful to the team.

I dont think many football experts around the world call DP World Class, most call him "Past it".

World Class is when a player is seriously considered to be among the best in the world at his position, so yes a player can be world class for a few seasons then not for a number of seasons.

Surely Henry wasn't world class when he was at Juve but he turned into one at Arsenal.

DP was World Class but hasnt been since a long time.

As for Contribution, my feeling is that DP still has a lot to give to Juve.
My ideal situation is that DP is given a new contract with less wages because he will not be our number 1 or number 2 striker/forward in the coming season but he is an awesome role model.

I think the biggest problem with DP is that he's always compared to the man he was pre-injury. I don't feel that's the right or fair approach. If a man is once the world's best footballer and after that he's only "good", having inconsistent seasons with both amazing moments and bitter disappointments, is it somehow less appreciative?

DP is NOT the player he was during 1996-1997 and he never will be again. So what? Many players have had those kind of runs (Rivaldo, anyone?). Still DP has contributed and even though he could've contributed more, saying he's a failure as a player or saying that he has been a complete disaster for the team is complete rubbish. Forget the past performances and his possible "potential", don't cry because he doesn't live up to the expectations which were made in 1996, because that's gone. Luckily he has been able to keep his bar pretty high compared to many other stars who have disappeared so quickly.

DP should be evaluated like any other player, and probably almost all will agree with me. It's just that some people say they do that and they can't see that they really don't. DP is a cult figure and because of his devoted fans and because of his glorious past some people are more eager to take a knock at him. Is it fair? What is fair, is life fair? It's not objective, that's for sure.

DP is an icon, a player who could've been the next Pele and who has always been expected to deliver magical moments. He's a target of unbelievable criticism that has gone beyond normal. DP has been critiziced for a reason, thanks to his on-and off-form, but as often he has been criticized unfairly because he's expected so much, maybe even too much?

I don't know what's the bottom line of my post but I hope some people have gotten something out of this.

When it's about Del Piero, everyone has an opinion. That tells something about him. No loser could be able to do that.

Maybe I should write another great DP poem...:D

Well, I dont expect him to be the player he was back then, but he hasn't played good enough anyhow, especially considering the fact that with such low performances he was put ahead of an onform Di Viao and probably a potential Miccoli.

Nonetheless those were the past, I do think DP can contribute still to Juve, but I doubt he will do so as a first team regular for the coming seasons. Hopefully his form last throughout the offseason.

If DP wasn't world class in 2003, you have to be out of the universe to be world class, which contradicts the meaning of world class. Were there that many players better than Del Piero? More than 10?

dp was happy on the bench against levorno , he was laughing with ferrara and blasi
As John Madden, the U.S. NFL sportscaster, puts it so eloquently: "Winning is a great deodorant". But it was great seeing DP as if he made peace with how the season worked out in the end. I figure he was sitting on the bench in Livorno to make room for a little game time next week at home, myself.

Sorry if this has been posted before, but on another subject, anyone catch this photo of DP hanging out with the Gallagher brothers ( ):

Last news... or should I say gosip? anyway:

ALEX GOT MARRIED!!!???
