"We arrived where we had to arrive. Del Piero as captain of the Azzurri. Not just as a squad player, not just as a starter, but as captain."

That's what La Gazzetta dello Sport writes on the first page. All eyes in Italy are on Del Piero tonight. Papers are even writing about the "best support striker of his generation" again. This truly is his renaissance and today is do or die for him. If he plays poorly tonight, I don't think he'll ever play for the Azzurri again. If he plays well and leads Italy to victory, no one will ever question him again.

Today, Friday the 13th, is going to be epic.

We all know how far Alex has come. I am confident that he'll do brilliantly well, and look forward to it. This is not about revenge or testament to those who wrote him off, but a satisfactory gift for those of us who were defiant and defended his honor and class.

Come on Capitano!

For a player that has nearly accomplished everything in his carreer, Del piero has never really been a protagonist for Italy. I think it's fair to say that Ale has been more of a hero for Juve than for Italia. Ever since Euro 2000, Del piero has never really had the leadership role he had in Juve for so many years, no one really counted on him to make a difference for Italy. He has been handed the sub role and has been only second best to Totti. Now for he first time in his carreer, he is captain and leader of the Azzuri. I hope he takes this golden chance and it couldn't have come at a better time.

He has been in formidable form all season and seems like he is in good shape, the best he's been in a long time. Never have so many people counted on Ale to lead Italy to victory. I hope the pressure doesn't get to him, and I hope he delivers.

Del Piero Closes In On Maldini Record

Alessandro Del Piero will make his 12th European Championship finals appearance tonight against Romania. Roberto Rossi lists the most active players for Italy in this tournament over the years…

Alessandro Del Piero has often been criticised over the years for not producing his best for Italy, however he is on the cusp of breaking the all-time Azzurri player appearance record at the Euros.

The Golden Boy, who is the only Italian to have played in four final tournaments, has made 11 appearances between 1996 and 2008.

Tonight against Romania he will play for the 12th time, putting him just one behind current record holder Paolo Maldini. Indeed if the 33-year-old impresses against the Tricoloriii, he would be in-line to equal Maldini during Tuesday’s final group game against France. Qualification to the knockout stages, which at present remains clouded in doubt, would surely then enable Del Piero to go on and overtake the legendary AC Milan symbol.
