I started using ICQ like 5 years ago. Nowadays msn is more popular and both have their good and bad sides so I use both now.

Do you need accounts on both to use it or does it set them up automaticly?

The "easiest" thing is to register on ICQ using the ICQ client, otherwise it's not as convenient. But with msn I think you can register as successfully through Trillian.

I use both, but I prefer msn to icq, cause of its layout

As Martin said, both have good and bad sides, but icq is better to sending programms, videos.
From time to time I have problems with both, so...
