The only things that can affect you is those you let affect you. Everyone has had something bad happen to them, but that doesnt mean they have to mean they will be depressed or suicidal in adulthood. How many serial killers, rapists, criminals, blame their state on their childhood and things that happened to them. But there are even more people who had the same things happen to them but they grew up to be a functional person. You can change anything and everything about yourself if you want. You are in control. You are the one thats in control of your faith. Of course parents (or bad parenting) can have a bad impact on someone, but they can change that if they want.
I believe in will power and character.
And if they are strong enough.

And not all people have the same bad experiences, so it's not like everyone has bad things. Depends on what kind of bad things.

And I definitely dont agree with this part: But there are even more people who had the same things happen to them but they grew up to be a functional person.
Is they were majority, we wouldnt have so many thieves, killers, rapists, criminals etc.
They are minority.

I dont believe that for a second. Just because someone had something bad happen to them they have to become disfunctional members of the community.

I've had a lot more shitty things happen to me than the average person, but I've managed to let it shape me the way I want it to. Everyone can do that if they really want. Its the same with alcohol and cigarettes. If you really want to you can leave them. There are people who try to stop drinking and smoking for years. My father said on the day of my birth: "I'm not gonna smoke and drink anymore", and he hasnt for 17 years. He just stopped over night

Its all about will power and character. Everyone can have character, but unfortunately they dont.

You completely miss my point.

I'm not speaking about bad things which happen to people in general, I'm speaking only about bad things, which happended cause of bad parents, things which came from them.
You can survive everything, if you have good bases, if you're strong and firm; and such things should be given you by parents.

So all those bad things which happened to you came from your parents?

To quit smoking, drinking is very easy, comparing to go through real problems.

No, I'm not talking about my parents, altho they are far from perfect and caused me quite a lot frustration and anger (they still do actually :groan: )

But I've gona thru a war, almost got killed, moved to foreign countries where I didnt know anybody, and didnt know the language, then I moved back from Sweden, one of the best countries in the world, to a war torn Sarajevo where again I didnt know anybody or anything, surrounded by nacionalism and hate every day. And all that before I was 13. And at the time it did have an affect on me, I was frustrated, anti-social, depressed, resentful, low self esteem and no confidence. I'm not prud of it, but thats the way it was. But one day I managed to see myself from outside and analyze myself and I decided to change the thing I didnt like. And in a period of perhaps 2 years I managed to change myself and shape my personality the way I want it to be.

I'm currently exactly the way I want to be. It might not be modest, but I do think I'm a better person than 80% of the world out there.

And alcohol and smogimd were just an example. The mind works on the same principle.

It's all about will power and character.

Parents are parents, they always make us children frustrated ;):D

But one thing to all this you said about your experiences: your parents were taking care about you in those bad times, werent they?
Think, what would be if they didnt.

EDITED: Zlatan, after reading all our post once more time, I see, that we're talking about two absolutely different things.
Well, if you would like to continue, I can write you some example to show my words more clear.
But not now, I need to go.
