I dont think you can make a judgement on the US without watching both. Obviously being the original our version is funnier but the us one ain't half bad either. Also considering how well Gervais has done in America since the office hit off there big time.
I haven't watched the British version so i won't comment on it at all. But the American version is lame as fuck, there is absolutely nothing funny about Carell making funny noises and weird faces and generally being awkward.

The office is pure brilliance, period
There is not a single thing in it that isn't hilarious. The closest USA got to British humor (which isn't surprising, considering the origin of the series).
