Those who died are lucky, cause you can't imagine what life will be to those who survived, the shock and losing everything, being homeless and all, earthquake is terrible

The problem isn't necessarily how Haiti is so poor, but rather how their villages/barrios were constructed on their terrain. Much of their already flimsy housing was built stacked upon one another on the side of hills and cliffs, making it very unstable even without a quake. 50% of the population, or a couple million people, live in such conditions.

Either that or know what to do and react. You can assess risk all you want, but when Murphy wants to say "hey" he will.

But you really don't know how you will go down until it actually happens.

In my first two months here, I experienced a 6.9 quake that broke up the Bay Bridge during the World Series. We've been waiting for something bigger ever since.

And it will happen at some point. Probability of one.

Exactly, that's why you stash your "emergency kit", tale a CPR/first aid course, run a couple miles a day or do some sort of exercise that keeps you in shape and go on with your life. Then you know what to do and you can react.

Seems to me that many people are aware of the dangers of everyday life, yet tend to hide from it rather than just preparing to deal.

When the big one hits, no amount of training will save you. Everything depends on the structural resistance or surrounding objects of the place you're in when it occurs.
