BTW, I think, and perhaps I'm alone in this, that Ziggy Stardust is one of the coolest songs ever written. It's melanconic and definitely holds a lot of tragedy, but also talks about idolatry and being on top of the world. Not to mention a great quote:

"He took it all too far, but boy could he play guitar"

and the two lines in which Bowie is a bit rough which makes it even better:

"So where were The Spiders" and "Making love with his ego"
I swear on my life that i've been having a bowie rediscovery session and just remarked on how damn cool he once was, and also said to my mother (in her day a bowie fan) how the riff at the beggining of that song is instantly recognisable. Bowie is a genius- I love how he does his own backing vocals on space oddity.

Very true. Space Oddity is terrific as well.

I always thought Bowie was overrated...I respect him as an artist, which he is in the true sense of the word, but I guess he's just not my cup of tea.

I always felt Bowie is strange, I am not saying anything negative at all about his music talents, but he's strange.

David Bowie was a genius as far as stage persona and showmanship was concerned.Though he's not really a genius when it comes to pure music talent IMO.Kind of like Kiss. They were great showmen, but i dont think either of Gene Simmons,Peter Criss,Paul Stanley or Ace Frehley can be compared to the likes of Jimmy Page,Roger Waters etc.Im a big fan of Kiss, but i always felt that their stage theatrics overshadowed their musical talents. The same goes for Bowie IMO.

I like it too. I keep stumbling on good Bowie songs. Sooner or later, I'll wind up a fan.

There's a novellette by Iain M. Banks called State of the Art about an alien civilisation studying earth from an enormous, phenominally powerful and intelligent space ship hiding in orbit. At one point, the ship's AI has a postcard sent to the BBC, requesting Space Oddity be played on the radio.

Just looking at song books of his songs, some of his best songs use very clever uses of inverted chords and subtle key changes, such memorable hooks and all this just makes a great artist.

Of course, he never wrote the wall.. so lets be frank:p but he is still great.
