I kinda get Carlo D's point.Unless you're a J.KRowling or something,i dont think you can make a living out of writing.Just my opinion.
It's not so different from the entertainment business. If as a novelist you get your big break, you're made, at least for a while! Or I should say, were made! Remember, nowadays home PC's & the internet are a necessity rather than the luxury they once were so book reading is becoming a dying art, & with so many "cut price" stores, author's royalties are less now too. Magazines & newspapers on the other hand are different. Make it as a journalist & you're really laughing...not necessarily in the size of your salary, but if you're working for a big name concern you have many "perks" including an almost bottomless expense account lifestyle. And if you get overseas assignments...

Are u suggesting that writing as a profession should not be considered to be working? If that is what your indeed saying it couldnt be further from the truth...especially if your writing for a major publication; having to worry about libel/defamation law suits, content, composition and structure, syntax and all of that. It is a whole lot of work!! and a whole lot of stress actually.
Of course you're right if you are talking serious writing & I'm assuming you mean journalism by the examples you've given...remember though, major publications, news outlets, tv etc have a specially employed legal staff to worry about what is published & your job is simply (which it isn't) to keep your readers/viewers interested, & if you let it get to you, stress is an understatement!
I didn't really want to get into this, but I didn't work particularly hard for my living, writing. I realised I had one youth with no repeat performances so I lived for the moment & if, as I did, I could find someone to employ me simply because of my fairly literate English writing style then that was his worry. I as good as had 3 years paid holiday out of that between my 22'nd & 25th years! I hope you get my point now, it was only a passing phase for me, part of growing up & eventually I had to seriously go to work.

I think he means fiction and such
I saved yours for last, man...I think you'll get the picture from the replies I made to the dudes above. As it happens I met quite a lot of "penniless intellectuals" in those days. If you don't make it you can end up a charity case!

Though I once went out with an intellectless Penny. A little slow, but she was pretty hot. :pumpkin:
What really got me about some of the "penniless intellectuals" I was talking about was the way they thought they were so superior. The thought of actually doing a day's work would have killed them!

I love writing myself, fiction and otherwise. Writing a book however is most likely destined to remain one of those things that I think far too often about that will never come to pass, unfortunately.

I have always been a very good writer and I have always loved reading and writing the English language. But, like all art forms, the modernization of our society has destroyed any hope of anyone creating anything substantial. Music, Art, and Writing are all pointless now. No one from out generation, or even from generations past have any real important things to contribute to the world.

Modern day works of Art (music and writing included) are just phoney little pseudo- philosophical pieces of garbage. The problem is, many people today are so desperate for inspiration, or for a place to "fit in" that they are easily influenced by rebellion and contradiction. There is always someone to blame and decisions to question and the modern day spoiled brats feel the need to justify their lacking intelligence by crucifying anything that represent any establishment. Whether it be Government, Religion, or Tradition, people feel so worthless that they need to go to give themselves purpose by going against the grain.

I don't remember the last good writer, I can barely remember the last good musician, and it is almost impossible to scrape the dust off of the memory of the last good artist. The new generation and generations of the recent past are all un-wise, under-educated and un-inspired. The reasoning behind this is another thread all together. But the fact remains completely aparant that art is dead.
