I only cared for club football. Didn't give a flying toss about the national team of a nation I didn't feel close to. We have a bit of a north-south divide in this country and back then almost all the players were from the North. It was then not really worth watching for me (long story that starts deep in history but these are the basics).
We have a different culture, a different way to express ourselves. If a Dutchmen tells you that 'its only sports' he's just trying to find a way to deal with it most of the time. When they get pissed off and come down hard on their own team (like right now, you should see the media) they do it out of huge disappointment and pain.
Its something that arose in the early '90s when we had a bugger team that didn't win anything. Everyone knew they could do it because they were victorious in '88 but they just failed time after time.
Can you picture the huge powerless feeling of the lone supporter on the stands shouting with his soar voice, on the edge of bursting into tears: "Come on! I know you can do it! I SAW you do it! What's wrong for god's sake?"
Then add to that the national trauma we have over here for always being the small nation incapable of securing its own survival that's crammed in between England, France and Germany (all of them nations much more successful and they're always keen on rubbing it in) and you have a combination that results into current behaviour.
And yes, I DID study that. That doesn't just come out of the big hat
