no other explanation than the server being bummed out at the moment... give it a while, is it urgent?

No. I'll try to find a mirror, but if it'll be back up at some stage, I'm not too worried. Thanks Gray.

np, good luck mate, it sounds important :)

    Theses :scared:
It's not quite that bad! I'm doing a final year project, which involves the design of a robotics lab for first year engineers, and the associated lab materials. Martin is the guy in that field, and I want his thesis, even if only to thump it down as a cited reference in my report.

Do you have a better idea of why? Is this likely to be a perminant problem?

Hard to say, could be temporary could be more permanent. When a server doesn't respond to ping requests, that means it's either blocking icmp or just won't accept connections at all.

I ran a port scan on it, ftp port isn't open so either filtered behind a firewall or the ftp server isn't running.

[off topic since we're not getting anywhere]
here's a "fun" excercise... use netcraft.com to check what your college/department runs on their server(s)

on the frontpage of netcraft, under "what's that site running?" enter the server name. here's mine:

    hist.no (college)
    Compaq Tru64, Apache/1.3.27 (Unix) PHP/4.2.3
    aitel.hist.no (cs department)
    Linux, Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) Debian GNU/Linux mod_ssl/2.8.9 OpenSSL/0.9.6c PHP/4.1.2
