I've heard a lot of good things about zonealarm but I've never used it myself.

I don't need a personal firewall cause I have a hardware firewall.

Ok thanks, I will try to look for it :)

Forgive me my ignorance in this ;) but what exactly is hardware firewall?
Or just write sth more about that, if you can.

    Zonealarm's okay

and what he meant by a hardware firewall was, whatever device manages his network, there's a built-in firewall. Some modems have routers and DHCP servers built in etc.

Yeah, my modem has a built in firewall, NAT and dhcp. Although I'm thinking about setting up a dhcp+dns myself on a separate box. :undecide:

    Ok...

So hardware firewall depends on my modem, right?
I dont need some special settings from my net provider?

Well if ur modem doesn't have firewall, then no amount of 'special settings' will allow u to use ur hardware for a firewall.

You'll have to use a software firewall, I heard Tiny Personal Firewall is okay, but I just use the Windows XP one.

I was asking about sth else :)

Let's say my modem has a built in firewall.
Do I need anything more from my net provider?

Here you are example with phone to make clear, what I'm asking about:
I have very good landline telephone, but some functions dont work there, cause my phone operator doesnt have some settings, which I needed to make it working.

So: do I need only special modem, or do I need sth more from my net provider?

So I will check out this one too.

Whether you can use your modem as a firewall entirely depends on the modem itself. As regards the phone line, from my modest understanding, any regular phone line will do to serve dial-up/DSL.

Ok, that's what I was asking about, thanks :)

Oh with phone it was just an example: how operator's settings affected my own phone some time ago.
