I am guessing you are trying to compress an already compressed file format... for example: jpeg, avi, mp3, etc. You will not see much of any file size optimization on files that are already in a compressed format.

Depends on the file format. If it's TIFF, for example, the answer is "no". If it's jpeg, it is. For music, if it's mp3 it is. If it is flac, it's likely not. That sort of thing.

While not the best resources, here's a starter link I :google:d and looks useful:

Website isn't working. But, I always thought that those guys that upload compilations compressed their files.

If it's a media file (sound, video, etc.), chances are 99% likely that it's going to be provided in a compressed format. Otherwise the file sizes would be even more gargantuan.

Compression formats like ZIP and RAR are best for things like text, Office files, etc. They buy you very little in compression on binary media files, because the compression has already been baked in the file format so that it can be passed around the network or save disk space, etc.

Yeah, they're already compressed. If you're trying to transfer it to a mobile phone perhaps you dont need it to be cd quality, maybe you could lower the bitrate and make the file smaller.
