@Jem83 went and got myself a big old bag of Kinetica Oat Gain, not sure if you're familiar with the product at all but here are the details http://www.kineticasports.com/gainers-c4/kinetica-oat-gain-4-8kg-raspberry-yoghurt-p34

I told the woman in the shop what I was after and this is what she had advised, hope she's right  Seemed to know her shit at least.

Is there a case to be made for having two separate gym threads? One for skinny girly men and one for gorillas? :snoop:

Oats are the shit

I'm not familiar with this product, though, I'd have to read up on it. It could have some other interesting ingredients to it. But slow digesting carbs are great for building muscle, and oats are simply phenomenal. I eat it every day now.

It's probably gonna be just as good for you, in the long run, and a lot more cheaper, just to buy regular oats.

I have my porridge in the morning anyway, but with work I was finding it harder to increase my protein/carb intake so this product should fill in the gaps fingers crossed. Unfortunately there are sweeteners incorporated.

Protein shakes should be taken before and after a work out?
There are two critical points: 1) immediately after waking up, and 2) post workout

Other than that, just make sure you have a steady flow of protein coming in throughout the day. There should be a bit of proteins in every meal.

If you're talking about weight-lifting, though, what I would do immediately after that is get some carbs in, because your muscles have just been emptied of their glycogen. So I would eat a banana and have some oatmeal or something like that immediately after the work-out. Then I would have my protein within an hour after the workout.

As for cardio, it's a little bit different. After cardio, you should drink your protein immediately (within 15 minutes after the cardio) and hold off the carbs for about an hour. The reason for it is that your insulin-sensitivity is super high after cardio, meaning that your insulin could easily spike if you have carbs immediately after cardio. When that happens, your body will shut down the fat-burning mode severely and instead use the carbs you just injested as fuel.

thanks X, I was advised to go for another product called Kinetica Oat Gain, very similar to the gold standard product I was originally looking at

Unfortunately I managed to pull a muscle in my back doing squats yesterday. Still carried on with the session though cause only girly men go home and cry about things like that.

Saying that, Ive been in agony for the past 24 hours :(

:D

Yeah, well, pains that are discomforting pain due to tearing up muscle fibers and working out really hard, that's the good pain. Only a bitch would stop due to that sort of pain, I agree.

But real pain in the joints or in your upper and lower back and neck etc. should be taken very seriously. Especially your back / neck. You do not want to sustain a severe injury in those areas, as you may never recover.

Listen to your body, always.

I know, I was working on arms that day though so the back wasn't being affected in anyway. Gonna buy a heat pack now before I go to work and some ibuprofen to alleviate the pain, the copious amounts of rum this evening should help too :D

This sounded oddly sexual :shifty:
