So I just bought a guitar, I got an Ibanez PF4 and why this one, because it is good for beginners according to the salesman. So how to start now, does anyone know of a way for a beginner to start creating tunes? an online guide, a book, something?

If yo download 'tuxguitar' it will let you use the the tabs labled' guitarpro' or 'powertab'. If i were you i would booka couple of lessons so you have someone show you the basics.

This is how I did it: got my guitar, went to guitar lessons, but only learnt some basic chords and scales, then I started learning songs on my own, either by ear or through guitar tabs. It's more fun when you figure out the songs and tunes on your own. Gives you a small sense of achievement.

And develops you understanding of the guitar for when you want to do arangements/write your own stuff

The pentatonic scales, first position and barre chords are the main things you need to start teaching yourself - most popular and well known music will be based around that.

Indeed. I think major, minor and minor pentatonic scales are the building blocks of guitar learning. Not so much of rhythm gist, but essential for playing "tunes".

I want to play classical rock, folk music and some reggae.

I wanted to see if it was electric/acoustic and if it was which kind. Ibanez make electrics essentially for one style - metal (i own one and im desperatley trying to sell it).

You will need power chords and major/minor/pentatonic scales for classic rock, Barre Chords and the blues scale for reggae and for folk you'll need first position chords.

I would suggest getting lessons for a few weeks to get used to the guitar - have someone show you how do get different sounds etc, how to play scales. You can learn it online but doing it face to face is a lot better. They will also show you basic chords and ask them to show you barre chords. Also ask them to teach you how to read tab - its really easy when its explained to you.

From there you can use ultimate guitar and find any songs you want to learn using tabs or chord charts.

The big thing with learning guitar is that initially things will happen quickly and you will pick the chords and start getting some songs going, but it wont sound natural. After a whil (took me 6 months when i was 12) you will start to loosen up when you play, the chord changes will become instinctive and it will all sound right.

Also you never practise guitar, you play guitar. It's always fun and if you keep doing it then it will sound great, just dont get put off while you are getting to that point...things take time.

Last thing, it hurts like a bitch when you start playing, and theres nothing you can do to stop it apart from playing more.

I also insist that you get lessons at least for a month or two. It will help greatly to have someone show you in person how to play and little tips on fingerings etc. If you really want to learn well you should take lessons.

Another suggestion: keep an hour or two everyday out of your schedule to play the guitar. Consistency is important. Or else, you forget what you learnt.

I am still where I am. I came back from my long vacation just two days ago and now I am trying to find an instructor.

Still Life, Blackwater Park, Ghost Reveries should be good for a start. You could check out Deliverance, Damnation, Watershed and Heritage later on. I don't like their first 2 albums a lot. But you could try em.
