I've inadvertently been listening to a lot of Zakk Wylde. Lately, I reckon he's the most complete metal guitarist on the go, I'd put him ahead of Randy Rhodes, when I saw him with Ozzy in 2007 it was fucking brutal.

Just thought I'd share

All he does is shred e minor pentatonic, not bad but I can think of many other better metal guitarists than him....

Iommi, Dimebag, Mustaine, Hetfield, Hinds, Cantrell, Morello to name a few

It's more often c minor :D. I mean that his rhythm plAying, his lead playing, his tone, his style, and his composition balance out as a complete player that few other players manage. Quite often I'd rather listen to someone widdle a pentatonic than hear herman ri sweep pick 10 scales in 2 seconds.

maybe, but I don't find much of his music very appealing. especially BLS. Seems a bit too 'metal' metal

Fair nuff man, it is most definitely 'metal' metal :D great for lifting.

Have you heard Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats? Quite a cool new NWOBH esque band, very sabbath like. I saw them support sabbath last year and it was the best support set I've seen.

actually pretty decent though. most modern bands people say are good aren't actually good. give 'The Sword' a listen if you haven't. similar but heavier.

Think we all are, what styles do you play?
Mostly finger style and rhythm. lately i'm thinking of buying an electric and playing lead guitar i was looking at esp ltd 256 it's in my price range. Any experience with this guitar, is it good?? I read some reviews and i like the sound but i still haven't decided to order one.

Guys that like metal and guitar can you answer what do you like about it in guitar playing? To me that noise is equal to torture and I just can't get it what's so pleasing about it, i cannot find any skill in their too apart from fast and accurate hitting for practice patterns.

This is no hate against metal post, just a curious question :)

Everything. Well mostly the riff, all about the awesome riff. Then also the heaviness, the (usually) darkness, the tone, the style of the music etc. The skill to me is writing the music, I mean a lot of it isn't really easy to play but if you've been playing like 5 years you should be able to play it, at least in the stuff I listen to. I don't really like anything with too much shredding, sweep picking etc or too much guitar 'virtuoso' wanking.

The LTDs are pretty nice guitars, even the low end ones. I've played that model a couple of times and for your first electric that's pretty nice. I had a MH-53 for a while but I sold it, it played really well for almost a base model guitar.

Alice and black sabbath I can get but for that you can do a lot of deep purple too and those I can get. But the rest, it's like a radio static to me :D There is absolutely nothing musically or even just sound pleasing in there to me.

Now this is a riff that is worth a mention.

What do you think the "old" metal vs. "newer" ones?

Maybe you aren't listening hard enough :p I probably wouldn't have liked all of that stuff when I just started listening to metal like metallica or whatever.

    Black Dog is better :D

Most new metal is shit, it's very repetitive. The problem is the bands all try to sound like each other instead of doing something different. Also, they tend to write songs that are fairly similar instead of being diverse within their own sound. The mixing is way too loud and 'flat' sounding meaning there is no dynamics in the music (over compressed), down tune for fake heaviness with boring uncreative riffs, crappy screamed vocals etc. It's like everything is done for the sake of it. The biggest example is that new djent shit. Very few modern metal bands (at least released their first album after 2000) I consider actually good. The best by far is Mastodon, I would rate them as the best band of the 2000s. Then some others like Gojira, High on Fire, The Sword, Baroness, Brainoil, Red Fang are good but most of them are boring shit.

    Like this maybe?

Black dog? The riff is legendary, but please show me in any metal such legendary stuff. Keep in mind that pauses in music are just important as the notes :D

The video you posted is something I just can't understand :D

I mean I can understand hip hop and other that music why people would like it. But metal... It's something not from this world for me.

Perhaps in your inability to understand why people enjoy it is the answer as to why people do.

It could be asserted that one's preferences in music are dictated by the ways in which they experience the world. Therefore if you do not experience the world in that way you won't be able to understand.

Could be, though I doubt people experience life differently, at least the majority and not the extreme cases. If you get hit in the face no matter who you are the experience will be the same, reaction will be different. Anyway just interesting to me that's all.
