I wouldn't put barca in the top 5.
They probably would be with that current team (I see the attacking talent they have and scream in frustration that I never get to see them play), but their history isn't as impressive as you'd think. They've often been near the top, but rarely won much. They've only got one CL title.

However, throw Milan's record of Scudetti into the mix and you will obviously see it is lacking when compared to the other contenders. Therefore, I would still have to say Real Madrid is the greatest team in history, just by a small margin..

Yes, though I am strictly speaking from a European competitions' perspective. At the end of the day, Real only ever had two fantastic stints with four decades of "averageness" in between (Ok they won the UEFA Cup in the mid 80's).
i would actually rate real, ajax, liverpool(taking into consideration the ban), and Bayern ahead of AC milan, which is without a doubt italy's voice in Europe.

You cannot define the Greatest team in the world as there have been different teams in different eras, who were at their time the greatest. I certainly would not say Real Madrid dispite their 9 C.L wins, during the 50's where they won 5 in a row (at the time where the C.L, didnt really mean much), & then a further 4 in the following 55 years which is totally poor. I'd have to say Milan on a more consistant level of honours.

Ajax and Bayern were the dominant force in Europe for a shorter time than Milan (early 70's and mid 70's respectively).

Liverpool were the team of the late 70's-mid 80's, and they would probably have won another CL without the ban. However I never liked their game : it was way too physical and frankly not at all innovative. Of course it's easy to speak with the benefit of hindshight, but Im pretty sure Sacchi's Milan would have wiped the floor with them.
oh come on how was Sacchi innovative? on another note, what do Milan fans make of their loss to Marseille in that famous final, do you claim it as a victory or just appearance in the final?

Sacchi was innovative in that he introduced zone football in Italy, a country that had only known man-marking football until then and which, following the triumphs of Trap's Juventus, considered this as the only viable approach to the game.

Of course way too much credit was given to him for this, as in the end the team was tailor-made for offensive football. Just another case of "being in the right place at the right time" actually.

But the fact remains that this kind of play had disappeared from Europe since the days of Cruyff's Ajax (at least at club level, as one could argue that Platini's France "football champagne" bore a resemblance with it). And in the otherwise dull and static post Liverpool era, Milan brought some much-needed fresh air.

The loss against Marseille, as I've said repeatedly, occured after we had dominated that tournament like maybe no other team before (winning all our games on the way to the final). Also Marseille famously were our bête noire, as they had already cost us the one year ban from Europe the season before (when we finisihed the serie A unbeaten with Van Basten at the peak of his talent : imagine if THAT team had played the CL that season).

But regardless, we still reached two CL finals (winning one) in the following two seasons, so at the end of the day Milan's European Empire lasted from 1989 to 1995.

oh I still remember that era of "Milan-assez!", those were tough times for juve fans
