Oh I see my random post about the greatest mind in the recorded history of man - see Church bans Greeks thread - has been made into its own thread.

Easy question really:

Leonardo da Vinci

but I told you all that yesterday :D

Do you know who Al Khwarizmi was?
I just read who he was and now I understand why some algebra books Ive used had arabic names :D

The problem is that here, when basic history/ general history of mathematics is taught, they just teach western history. No China, India, Persia, etc.

Yea same here, it's pretty sad. Mathematics was pretty much started in that part of the world.

I'd go with Einstein or Newton but I suppose greatest mind doesn't have to involve complex calculations, it could be an artist - I just appreciate physicists and mathematicians work more.

I'd love to read a good book on the history of Arabian mathematics, primed for a Western audience. Does anyone know of such a book?

da Vinci did it all - architecture, engineering, mathmatics, biophysics, painting, sculpture. I think he has no peer due to broad range of talents.

Because of their importance and practicality IMO science and mathematics are always given precedence over the arts...in that sense there is hardly any contest unless we manage to view the two faculties on equal ground.
