Napoli medic: 'Chubby players are happy'

Napoli’s chief medic explains the key to their lack of injuries. “I’d rather players were chubby and happy than skinny and sad.”

The Partenopei had fewer injuries than any other side during the Serie A season, despite many of the same XI playing every match, so what was their secret?

“We have an exceptional group working with the team and this year thanks to the Coach and his staff we were in the best condition to do our jobs,” Doctor Alfonso De Nicola told Julie Italia.

“This summer some will play in Euro 2016, others have friendlies and Gonzalo Higuain will be at the Copa America. That increases our work-load and responsibility.

“There are four or five players who’ll have quite a long vacation and we gave them a specific training programme.

“These lads call us almost every day, as they have really got into the idea they need to look after their own business - in other words their bodies - and let the professionals guide them.”

There was some controversy during a dip in form when Higuain was accused of being overweight.

“I’ve seen players with a few extra kgs do better than when they were thinner. The truth is we need to evaluate every player as a unique individual.

“I see some players who are very thin and sad, whereas the chubby ones can go at 200km per hour. The balance between mind and body is the key.”

I bet 'experts' will talk about his weight if he doesn't score as much as they want. And with his price tag, anything under 2 goals a game won't be enough for them.

Let's hope he scores goals just the way Ronaldo used to do even when he was fat.

Ronaldo was the best forward in history. Thats not really a fair comparison

Yes, he is great at beating the living hell out of small Serie A clubs and chokes when it matters. An anti-Morata so to say. Just what we need in our situation.
When napoli needed to win but was leaking goals, Gonzalo scoring 2 goals when beeing behind each time but missing a penalty on the third is choking

Morata had 15 goals in two Serie A seasons, but his lack of regular goal scoring would never be considered choking, because it's something to look down on, the ability to score alot of goals very regularly. Different standards I guess, which signals the quality difference between the two players, even if one is more adept at rising to the big occasion mentally speaking, it's still kinda ridicolous to compare them like they are equals when the efficiency numbers are so vastly different.

It's so funny how you overhype Morata. Like as if nobody else is capable of scoring important goals in the team.

A guy who has never touched double figures in terms of goals shouldn't be given such high praise no matter how many important moments he's had in his Juventus career. Ironically his 'choking' in front of goal against Seville was partly responsible for us going out earlier than expected.

Morata is just a supersub at this point. He has a long way to go to be at least remotely as good as Higuain.

Higuain at 24 already had a maginificent goal scoring record one that Morata can only dream of at this point.

Higuain is a significant upgrade on Morata and it's not even debatable.

That being said, Morata is still an extremely talented player, and someone that still has potential to do bigger and better things. Has all the tools, just needs to find consistency in his performances. At this point though, he just doesn't score enough goals. He is great at assisting, he's quick, very skilful and can spark counter attacks, but he lacks the cutting edge that Higuain does.

I personally seen us lose 4 CL finals and 2-3 Coppas, one Uefa cup final (fuck Dino Baggio). So excuse me if cope with the bitter heartache with some sarcasm.

At least we've won finals before. Even if it's only a paltry 2 CLs. And we were the first club in Europe to win every single European (and world) trophy available. Let's just hope we win this damn trophy in the next couple of years.

Perfect, he came to the right club to choke on finals for. We do that often enough that no one would bat an eye when we do again.

It might sound ridiculous, but it isn't imo. You also have to consider the fact that Higuain for example is a power based central forward. There's no reason why Napoli would have wanted him to have as little body fat as Callejon for example.
