Look back at this thread. How I was beginning to have an intelligent and rational conversation with USAJuvetini and how the ALMIGHTY members of this forum contributed in their constructive way to our chat. And your accusing me of not making any points?

Let me rephrase that: He feels, as most members, that you didnt make any valid points, especially when you mentioned Prozac and said Nedved doesnt deserve the Golden Ball. He had a fantastic last season leading us to the Serie A and the CL FInal, scoring against Barcelona, scoring against Real, and practically carrying the team on his shoulders, and if Nedved doesnt deserve the Ballon D'Or than Maldini most certanly doesnt.

Sorry Maldini won three cups....played all the finals and actually plays with consistence. No disappearing acts here.
Buffon carried the team. You would have made Pippo the hero of that game had Buffon not played. Don't be foolish and blind.

:wallbang:

We are talking about last season and not about an entire career. If we were, hell give the Ballon D'Or to Baggio, or Keane or Kahn...

Buffon was vital last year but Neddy was more important. You cant win by playing 0-0, and Nedved was the most lethal part of our attack.

And I am neither foolish nor blind.

If its about assists then many others should be in front of him. Whats with these stats? What is this Baseball?
Look, you've either got rely on expert testimony or statistics to prove this point. Unfortunately for you, both point to Nedved being the best footballer in europe.

Well, if you go by statistics alone, then Maldini shouldn't even be mentioned, If I'm correct. However, it's all relative to the position that you play.

Why do Milan fans come here to "remind" us about may 28th? Havent you gotten over it already? I would like to remind you that we've beaten Milan twice after that.

That's why I favour a combination of expert testimony and statistics. Surely coaches and players know who is really the best out there. That's why they are all talking about Nedved and the Golden Ball.

So you're saying Nedved was not consistent last season? You're either crazy or have not watched Juve games last season. If there's anyone who was not consistent last season is the WHOLE Milan team who just went downhill from January onwards. They were lucky that episodes during Ajax/Inter/Juve CL games were in there favour.

Ian, I wanted to ask you this.

Is there an individual statistical category for a players defensive efficiency?

Here in the US, as I'm sure you're well aware, there are categories for defensive attributes, such as +/- in the NHL, steals per game/blocked shots per game in basketball, tackles, sacks, interceptions in american football. Well, you know what I mean.

I understand about the expert testimony portion of determining how well a player is performing, but if that testimony is originating for the player's camp, or propaganda type journalism, then how much validity is there in those testimonials?

I'm just wondering, because football seems to be less about statisitcs than any sport I can recall. Then again, I live in the US, and it's all about numbers.

    Thanks in advance.

But it's harder in football. There are a lot of tackles in a match and what would you rate? How many tackles a defender had, altho one defender migh have had 5 fairly good tackles, while the other had one brilliant when he took the ball of the oppenonts foot before he got a shot on? Or how many times a play shielded the ball and let it go out?

The best you can do IMO is percentage, how many he tried and how many he succeeded, but it's rarely done IMO.

You can't really make statisitcs about marking. A player could shut out some of the best attackers with some awesome marking, but suck in the statisitcs cuz of his tackles... if you know what I'm saying.

Well, maybe there can be a statistic where man-marking comes into play. Such as, If Maldini is assigned to man-mark Trezeguet, and Trez scores, then it's a -1 in that category.

However, it probably wouldn't work in all leagues, because the Italian league, I feel, does more man-marking than any other league in Europe. And besides, strikers don't mark anybody.

Anyway, I was just wondering if there was any sort of system to which they get graded on their defensive responsibilities. All this word-of-mouth type of judgement can worry me a little bit, as I alluded to on my previous post.

No, it wouldnt work. It's easy say in the NBA, you've got points, rebounds, assists, steals, etc. everything is easy to notice and to put into statistics.
