I actually thought for a 4-5 year period, Barzagli was a much more intelligent and better defender than Chiellini. Barzagli from like 2011-2016 was just insult brilliant. Completely underrated by most fans.

Barzagli sure was a very elegant and underrated defender, just as dominant on his day, arguably was more impactful as part of a back 3 than even Chiellini was for much of the period you’ve mentioned, but as always when things got tough and physical Chiellini was the one that stood out most, regardless if it was in a 3 CB’s or 2 CB’s pairing, he would always look to impose himself from the very first minutes and manmark out of the game whoever he was up against on the day.

And keep in mind this was a 37yo Chiellini recently back from an ACL injury, just to make a point, but there’s been plenty of similar dominant performances by him in a Juve shirt too, especially in many of the most high pressure games we’ve encountered over the years.
