@igortudor what do you mean don't sell core players? How do you not sell if a player wants out? Keeping against his will? That would fuck squad harmony so bad and would send a negative message to future transfers, to other squad players etc. We had to sell, because the player wanted to be sold.

This isn't true at all. Teams keep players who want to leave all the time. If it was Vidal who asked to move to Bayern, you tell him, you will sell him on condition of finding a replacement and if an appropriate offer comes. Otherwise he will stay for another season. Vidal is a professional on the field. Always has been, always will be. If we had asked him to stay one more season I'm a certain he would have given his all for the club.

Instead we sell him, under-value, very quickly, and without searching out an adequate replacement first.

No one here is saying that Vidal shouldn't have been sold under any circumstance. We're saying, he shouldn't have been sold unless the right offer came along, and/or we had an adequate replacement lined-up or already purchased which we clearly didn't.

Look at how Schalke dealt with Draxler. They confirmed they had discussions with the player who asked to leave, and told him they would only sell him if an adequate offer arrived. And they held out until that offer arrived.

Modric comes to mind. United made an offer for him that tottenham refused. Modric had a fall out with levy and even went to the press with his complaints. Tottenham continued to refuse to give to United and sold him a year later to Madrid for big money. Because Modric had a career to care about and wanted to move to a higher club, he was convinced to stay and give his best for 1 more year and he did just that. Tottenham sold him on their terms despite him wanting United one year before. I don't see why we couldn't have done the same with Vidal. 1 more season at his 2012 or 2013 seasons form and he would have been interesting to the big 3 teams.

Modric is not the only case that this happened. Lewandowski asked to leave and Dortmund made him see out his contract and he still performed (actually the best form of his life) for a year knowing that he would join the enemy in a year for free.
